They all fall within the definition we outlined in class, for example; the Oklahoma bombing by Timothy McVeigh falls within the second component we outlined as terrorism against civilian targets. I really had to read this section two or three times especially with the destroying of the abortion clinics by Rev. Michael Bray, and on some level I was understanding why he had committed the criminal act but as I thought about it, the destroying of the abortion clinics was more of a political objective then all religious which Bray tried to come
Before delving into his arguments, Shepkaru repeated the most popular theories of modern historians like Robert Chazan, Jonathan Riley-Smith, and many others as to what were the root causes of the violence against the European Jews. Robert Chazan debates that the Crusaders were driven by “religious idealism” which was blended with a “distorted” version of Pope Urban II’s message; whereas, Jonathan Riley-Smith opines that the Crusaders were so blinded by “religious idealism” that they could not even identify the true enemy from a Muslim or Jew. Taken from Dana Munro and H.E.J Cowdrey, Shepkaru utilizes Pope Urban II’s speech as a backdrop for this scenario.
Even those Arab Americans who were already incarcerated experienced unjust treatment by police officers. Events leading up to September 11 2001. Retrieved from http://www.gcsehistory.org.uk/modernworld/terrorism/buildupto911.htm This website speaks about events leading up to 9/11. These events caused a buildup which lead to the events of 9/11. There are quotes directly from Osama bid Laden stating why he chose to target America.
Racism Post 9/11 September 11th 2001 will forever be remembered as 102 minutes that changed America. The attacks not only shook the nation with fear but altered racial stereotypes until this very day. When one reflects upon the media post 9/11, they initially spot the increases in Arab/Muslim prejudged remarks; however, with a decade past one could argue movies and television shows have managed to represent a more accurate illustration of life in the Middle East. Days following the attacks on the twin towers, the media occupied its broadcast with horrible racial stereotypes. Newspapers, homepages, and newscasts filled their content with prejudiced information which distorted many Americans point of view.
On May 11, 1973 Senator Proxmire, Vice President Agnew, and a few others have criticized the press about the allegations made about the Watergate scandals. One journalist in particular was accused of false accusations, Mr. John Dean. Mr. Dean reported about the Watergate scandals calling it was a cover up and president Nixon knew about what was going on. Most newspaper editorials backed up Dean saying that journalist’s job is to report the whole story and not just half of the story. Allegations acquired saying that Dean planned it all, it was a self-serving tale and that Dean wanted minimal criminal charges and maximum leverage in immunity (Jones & Company,
The definition of a crusade is when someone is lead or takes part in a campaign concerning a social, political, or religious issue.During and after the crusades there were positives and negatives left behind. Negatives such as misery and pain and also positive impacts were things such as boosted trade and economy. The destruction of the middle east along the way to Constantinople left a bitter taste in mouths of the Muslims. As it states in document five, the relations between Muslims and Christians would worsen. Surprisingly Christians even attacked their own allies, as it implies in document six.
When we first think of Muslims we think of bomb throwing, gun carrying, Taliban crazed murderers, unless you’re a politician then you say the second, more people-pleasing thing that comes to mind. Undeniably, the common belief in America is that all Arabs are Muslims, therefore all Muslims are terrorists, therefore women's rights get thrown out of the window, and thereby the Islamic religion is bad. Yet, Muslim culture and the Islamic religion have some extraordinarily, beautiful traits but are sadly overshadowed by all the negative. Stereotypes bombard us everyday but the most overlying stereotype is that Arabs are all the same, and it has been programmed into our nation’s youth. It’s like the prejudice our parents were raised to have
Arab culture often embraces Islam and they make use of the Arabic language. Arabs have various views regarding terrorism as a way to express their sovereignty. Arab Americans have contributed in the fields of labor, health, social justice, law, cultural awareness and community development by putting their own interest aside and working for the betterment of all. The terrorist attacks of September 11th not only brought Arabs to public attention, but also put them at risk and in danger of discrimination and prejudice. Still to this day discrimination is present throughout the U.S. many Arabs dress differently than do other Americans; their cuisine is drastically different and their traditions are different.
It would make more sense and be more efficient to only be interested in the white males that are in the area. Some negative aspects of racial profiling are the reinforcement of racial stereotypes and preconceived notions about certain racial or ethnic groups. When people think that the TSA are targeting Muslim men, this could help to reinforce Islamophobia. Often times racial profiling will help justify irrational fears and notions that someone may have about people of a different race. A real life example given by the ACLU is “In December 2001, an American citizen of Middle Eastern descent named Assem Bayaa cleared all the security checks at Los Angeles airport and attempted to board a flight to New York.
There have been laws put into place to prevent racial profiling based on an individuals religion or religious appearance in four states, Alaska, California, Massachusetts and Arkansas. (Racial Profiling, 2009) Orientalism is a demeaning point of view a person, often from the western hemisphere, has towards individuals from Asian or Arabic Middle Eastern decent. A couple examples of characteristics are mysteriousness and religious extremism. The number of hates crimes towards Muslims and Arabs have risen since the 9/11 attacks. People are often judged and immediately associated with terrorist groups simply by looking a certain way.
