ASSIGNMENT ON DIGITAL IMAGE PROCESSING SUBMITTED BY, M.Sujatha, II M.Sc computer science APPLICATIONS OF DIGITAL IMAGE PROCESSING IMAGE-DEFINITION: An image (from Latin: imago) is an artifact that depicts or records visual perception, for example a two-dimensional picture, that has a similar appearance to some subject–usually a physical object or a person, thus providing a depiction of it. IMAGE PROCESSING: An image processing system consists of a light source to illuminate the scene, a sensor system and an interface between the sensor system and the computer. The interface converts analog information into digital data. DIGITAL IMAGE: A digital image is a representation of a two-dimensional image using ones and zeros(binary). It is also defined as a depiction recorded electronically to allow viewing or transmission on a computer. DIGITAL IMAGE PROCESSING: Digital image processing is the use of computer algorithms to perform image processing on digital images. It allows a much wider range of algorithms to be applied to the input data and can avoid problems such as the build-up of noise and signal distortion during processing. Since images are defined over two dimensions (perhaps more) digital image processing may be modeled in the form of multidimensional systems. HISTORY: Many of the techniques of digital image processing, or digital picture processing as it often was called, were developed in the 1960s at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Bell Laboratories, University of Maryland, and a few other research facilities, with application to satellite imagery, wire-photo standards conversion, medical imaging, videophone, character recognition, and
