Different ways to strengthen your finger to play piano For beginner pianists, and especially players with small hands, building up the strength and dexterity of your hands and fingers can do wonders for your playing. Just as singers need to warm up their most important muscle with vocal warm-ups, piano players need to take their fingers into consideration. Here are some great exercises to improve your finger strength. I am going to introduce you four exercises that you can practice away from the piano and four exercises that you can practice at the piano. PRACTICE AWAY FROM THE PIANO: 1) Squeezing One of the most common ways to increase your finger strength and endurance is the use of grip strengthening devices that the user compresses with the strength of the hand. An example of a grip strengthener are grip balls that are hand sized spheres made of material that will deform when squeezed, but will return to its original shape in the absence of pressure. You can also make your own squeezing equipment by using a rubber ball or partially inflated medicine ball; the more inflated the ball, the stronger the grip needed to hold it. A tennis ball also provides a good amount of pressure to work the fingers. When you are doing this exercise, you should hold the squeeze for 10 to 20 seconds. Release and rest for a count to 10. Repeat this exercise 10 times on each hand. Grip balls and other grip devices can be squeezed to increase finger strength at any time that the hands are idle. 2) Thumb Opposition You can increase your flexibility and strength with an easy exercise called a thumb opposition, in which you hold one hand up straight with your fingers pointing upward, then take your thumb and apply it firmly to the fingertip of your little finger.
