TITLE : Describe and evaluate the importance of engineering for sustainability for a non-specialist audience DATE : 25 August, 2012 Describe and evaluate the importance of engineering for sustainability for a non-specialist audience Engineering has a long history. In 3300 BC, The Egyptians built the pyramids. After thousands of years , engineering has experienced rapid development. In addition, now engineering includes many subjects, for example, computer engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering and so on. According to Wright (2002) Civil is a very comprehensive department of engineering, and it includes many areas. This project will look at three areas to illustrate sustainable civil engineering, these will be building, transportation and environment, and then will evaluate its importance to subject area. First of all, there are more and more green buildings in the world. In the 20th century, human beings is beginning to feel that the natural energy will be exhausted , so there have be green buildings. Before buildings will be built, the first thing is design. Today, many of the buildings are designed to be green buildings in the design stage, and this is not easy thing. According to Vallero and Brasier (2008) ,“Green design transcends mere descriptions of the techniques that may be employed in shaping a more sustainable existence on Earth." The second is buildings materials, Many buildings use large areas of glass. From a green building point of view , this glass will make a better indoor lighting and in the winter a lot of sunlight will warm the house.
