Dana Hall: Funding a Mission (A) Dana hall is a private all-girls school founded in 1870, located in Wellesley, MA. The school has its fame of been a well know healthy school, however since early 1980’s, they’ve been struggling to survive and questioning themselves whether or not to maintain their mission on single-sex education. The school’s enrollment is falling and deficits are becoming the norm. They have gone from 450 to 374 students in a short period and this decline occurred even when they expanded into other grades and ages. Dana Hall has practically been living from year to year in which the tuition has no longer being enough to cover expenses and other sources of income is necessary to give them an unstable financial base. Through the two strategies, cited in the text “The Innovator’s Solution” by Christensen, Raynor, & Anthony, I believe that an emergent strategy should be taken at Dana Hall case, because its not clear what the right strategy should be and it is hard to read the future. “Emergent strategies are responses to unanticipated opportunities, problems, and success that were unforeseen in the deliberate strategy-making process.” (Christensen, Raynor, & Anthony, 2003) To conclude, Elaine Betts, after listening to the school committee, should manage the school in a way in which she will be applying theories and principles to improve the school growth, and maintain this well known and widely respected academic institute.
