Education: Cyber Charter Schools vs. Public School When most people think of education, they think about “brick and mortar” schools, or public schools. Another option, homeschooling, is quickly becoming an acceptable form of education in today’s world. Advancements in technology make it easier to home school your children. There are cyber schools, also called charter schools that you can enroll your children in. The debate over which is better for your children is a heated debate. Supporters on both sides have strong arguments supporting their choice of education. This is not a decision that should be made lightly. Both types of schooling need to be evaluated to determine which would be the best choice for the children as well as the parents. Most people are familiar with the public education system and what it has to offer, an education in a structured environment with other children. Therefore I would like to describe Cyber Charter schools for home schooling your children. Nearly 1.5 to 2 million children are home schooled (Lines, 2000, 12). The growth rate for home schooling is 7 to 15 percent per year (Shaw, Isabel. The Pros and Cons of Homeschooling). Technology has made it easier than ever before to educate your child at home. The cyber charter schools, such as the Agora Cyber Charter school, are full-time, tuition-free online public schools. They have state-certified teachers that the children interact with online and/or on the telephone. The parents are considered a “learning coach” and they oversee the progress of the children and modifies the pace and schedule for the child. They have a rich curriculum of courses available to students. Students spend approximately four to six hours a day on schoolwork. All of the materials needed are supplied by the school, such as textbooks, CDs, videos and other hands on tools needed for each subject.
