Choose Cuzco, Peru! History of Cuzco Cuzco's exciting history goes back way before 1000 B.C. when the Marcavalle culture was in power. In the second phase of its history, around 800 B.C., Cuzco was home to the Chanapata culture. Several states were later developed, one of the first ones being Qotakalli around 600 A.D. The Incan civilization arrived around 1200 A.D. Incan builders then planned and built the city in the shape of a puma. The first Spanish soldiers arrived in 1533. Spanish conqueror Francisco Pizarro re-founded Cuzco in 1534. Many buildings built after the Spanish conquest had Spanish influence mixed with Incan architecture. The Spanish built new things in the old Incan city, replacing Incan temples with churches and palaces.
