The study focused on motor skills and language ability, individual differences in areas of motor skills and language ability, forms of play, attachment /possessiveness, pro social behaviors and empathy, and forms of self-regulation. These stages are examined not only through observation but also through an interview with the parents. The parents are asked questions that compare and contrast development stages between their child as an infant and toddler. The Nursery is split into two intakes, an AM and PM cohort, and the boy in question was in the AM cohort. So, in the mornings, my duties and responsibilities have revolved around his IEP targets as well his social needs in the classroom; his IEP targets are based around his speech and language development and his mobility. In my setting I am a baby room supervisor and on one occasion we had a child that was under social services. My manager Mrs Smith informed me of this before the child started with us. She also give me some background information on the child, child A is the youngest of three girls and the girls are attending nursery as respite for mum. Mum has a drink problem and dad is a schizophrenic. We had to work closely with mum and we had regular contact with social services.
From the day that we are born, we begin to experience our first informal controls. A new mother follows directions from nurses, family and friends of when and how to care for her newborn. So we are set on feeding, sleeping and changing schedules according to our parents. As we grow older, these simple life standards grow more complex. Our parents tell us with who, when, and what to play with and what is or is not appropriate behavior when and where.
