Corrections and Treatment CJS240 July 22, 2012 Corrections and Treatment The courts can implement many different kinds of treatments to punish juveniles rather than to incarcerate them. Community-based treatments include, but are not limited to, house arrest, residential programs, and probation. House arrest consist of confining the juvenile offender within his or her residence. An electronic monitoring device is used to determine the juvenile’s location at all times. The device, which the juvenile has to be within range of, is placed inside the residence. The juveniles can still attend school and work but once it is over they have to go back into their home. This community-based treatment is by far the least expensive method for punishing juveniles oppose to prison or jail. Residential programs consist of foster homes, group homes, boarding schools, etc. Juveniles who are in a residential program are provided with daily life skills training, education, counseling, and much more. They are placed with other juveniles in a stable environment with a daily scheduled routine and are guided by professional staff members. Residential programs help juveniles rehabilitate, thus, making this program important within the community-based treatment methods. Many juveniles, not all, often rehabilitate from residential programs, as a result their behavior and attitude towards life changes for the better. Probation also focuses on the rehabilitation of juveniles. It teaches the juveniles to be more responsible when it comes to making decisions. They have the benefits of the probation officer assisting them and guiding them into the right direction.
