Contract Grading System Do you think that the grading system that we have now is right for everyone? For some people it works, but for others, it just doesn't. What would you do if you could choose the grade that you get in school? What if you knew exactly what the teacher wanted instead of sitting there trying to guess what they wanted? The contract grading system would be less stressful for both the students and the teacher, as well as, easier to understand, fair, and accurate. The contract grading system is very simple. Here's how it works. The teacher would make up a very clear rubric as to what they want for each grade. There are no grades given during the year. Instead everything you had done during the year is added up and put into 5 categories, much like the traditional grading system. An “A” which is 90% of the work completes, a B is 80% of work completed, a C is 70% of work completed, a D is 60% of work completed, and a F is 50% of work completed during the year. Where as you would get a grade for a single assignment completed it is either accepted or handed back to be revised until it is acceptable. Because the system doesn't rely on grades given regularly it is less stressful for the students. They don't have to worry about what the assignment got as a grade. Which in turn means, less grading for the teacher. Less time they have to spend at a desk trying to figure out what grade that piece got, if it was better or worse than the one before, and what it's missing. As long as the rubric is clear, the system is easy understood. As long as the students do the work, they will get a good grade. They choose what they want to do or not depending on what grade they want to make in that particular class. The students have way less to worry about because of this simple, easiy to follow, grading system. It's fair to everyone all around, in my opinion. The
