Computers and Educational Effectiveness In the reading “Floppy Disk Fallacies”, Elizabeth Bohnhorst wrote this passage as a college student (Mauk and Metz, 2014:208-11). This essay was written after realizing computer technology’s effects on her daughter’s educational process. Computers are a dominant force in our current society and are used in various ways or purposes. Computerized technology has been incorporated in education for some time. Although there are many pros for computers in education, Bohnhorst opens our eyes to the cons as well. Bohnhurst mentioned that her daughter was not very stimulated by a power point presentation in her class. You would think that a young child would enjoy looking at a presentation rather than reading a book or listening to a lecture on the subject matter. These forms of technology are supposed to enhance the learning experience, or grab the attention of the intended audience. Through her daughter, Bohnhorst realized that computer technology is not always effective in a classroom setting. Computers are used for recreational, professional, and educational purposes. Recreationally, computers are used just for social and entertainment purposes. Most companies and professionals are totally reliant on computer technology. Educational institutions use computers as a vital tool in the education process. Today they are viewed as a need rather than a want. Bohnhorst makes everyone aware that computers in America’s public school systems are high, and school officials are proactively pushing to accumulate more. This could lead to a decrease in funding for other educational needs, but she also points out that there is a need for computers if our children are to be competitive in modern society. We live in an inconstant technological society; in order to compete, students need access to computers and technological tools to do so.
