PHILOSOPHY OF NURSING Philosophy of Nursing My philosophy of nursing is centered on the needs of the patients; both physical and emotional. Patient’s needs are not just limited to their primary illness; but their needs include the whole person and their family. A nurse must have the ability to adapt to each patient’s situation and realize that although the core values of the care provided is theoretically the same; each patient requires an individualized plan of care. In my practice, I try to develop a good relationship with each of my patients. In the operating room instilling a level of comfort that encourages them to voice their concerns about their care, upcoming procedure, and possible outcomes is vital to the patient’s wellbeing.
Once schooling is over, many nurses tend to forget that nursing theory should be incorporated into daily nursing life. Nursing theories help guide the understanding of nursing practice and also enhance knowledge. As the nursing profession changes and grows, so does nursing theory. With patient centered care being the standard, a valuable theory to comprehend is Kolcaba's Theory of Comfort. This paper will provide understanding of the theory of nursing, key concepts of the theory of comfort, and how these concepts and theories are relatable to current nursing leadership.
In order to be successful the nurse is able to understand and communicate the needs of the patient, be knowledgeable of available resources, and have the tenacity to stand up for their patients. Definition of Nursing In my initial paper I mention M. Jean Watson, Florence Nightingale, and Dorthea Orem as theorists that captured my philosophy of nursing. While I still think there is a great deal to be 2 learned from these theorists, I have found through my clinical experiences that the theorist I lean more towards depends on where in the hospital or community I am working and the patient or client I am working with. As the semesters have gone on I have found a love for fast paced, high stress environments, such as the Emergency Department. Virginia Henderson’s Definition of Nursing targets this population, focusing on patient safety and nursing knowledge.
The following assignment will discuss the professional role of the student nurse and the registered general nurse (RGN) within the inter-professional team (IPT). It will define the individual role of the both the student and registered nurse. It will then examine how their roles differ from each other and how they collaborate alongside the inter-professional team. Establishment between the terminologies of other medical teams which may cause misunderstanding, for example the multidisciplinary team will follow. A determination of what professionals are involved in the IPT will be examined, expressing why they work this way and the standards each professional must maintain.
Different styles are appropriate depending on the situation of the organization and the personalities of the workstaff and leader. Because of the effects of leadership on staff, the style a nurse leader uses should be carefully chosen to represent both her personal beliefs and the beliefs of the organization in which she functions. Using this research, the author analyzed the leadership style of the nurse leader interviewed, Anita Siegel, Deputy Director of Alameda County Public Health Department. Matching her style of leadership to her position and activities, its effectiveness in her organization is assessed. Review of the Literature Gullo and Gerstle (2004) undertook a descriptive study to determine if transformational leadership had positive effects on the registered nursing staff in a facility undergoing restructuring.
The focus of this paper is the theoretical structure of the Virginia Henderson’s model and the illustration of the theory in a case of medical surgical unit. Overview The definition of nursing as per Henderson’s model is “The act of attending to people, sick or well, leading to the promotion of health or in peaceful death. These activities are usually performed by the patients themselves provided they have the sufficient strength, will and knowledge (Fitzpatrick & Whall, 2005). It is the core belief of Henderson that nurses should be capable of teaching patients how to care for self. She also places importance on the responsibility of the nurse in the rehabilitation of the patients.
MENTORSHIP IN PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE The aim of this essay is to demonstrate author’s role as a mentor in organising, managing and leading programmes of learning and critically reflect and evaluate own performance while working with a student in clinical setting. Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) (2006) defines the term ‘mentor’ as the role of a registered nurse who facilitates learning and supervises and assesses students in the practice. Furthermore, NMC also identifies eight domains and standards that must be achieved to become a mentor. In this assignment, author will be referring to those Standards to Support Learning and Assessment in Practice. First of all author will look at the personal and professional reasons to undertake this module.
Concept Comparison and Analysis across Theories Lori Hamilton NUR/513 October 14, 2013 Georgia Swank Concept Comparison and Analysis across Theories As a profession, nursing theorists have come up with different theories that support and guide nursing practice. This paper will discuss the role of nursing in both Virginia Henderson’s Need Theory and Dorothea Orem’s Self Care Theory. The premise of each theory is the nurse will care for the patient until the patient can care for his or her self. By comparing and analyzing each theory, one will be able to get a better understanding of how to best apply the nursing theory in practice. In both, Henderson’s Need Theory and Orem’s Self Care Theory, the ‘role of nursing’ is the core concept.
To avoid misunderstandings, close contact with the multidisciplinary and primary health care teams should be maintained. Discharge planning in practice Discharge planning at The Royal Marsden Hospital is carried out by clinical nurse specialists for community liaison. They aim to provide a holistic service that meets the needs of patients with cancer in both the hospital and the community. The extensive treatment that many oncology patients receive often makes them quite ill and they may need a 'trial' discharge to assess whether they can manage at home. Patients and carers are consulted throughout the discharge planning process.
Personal Career Analysis: Registered Nurse The career that I chose to research is registered nursing. “Registered nurses (RNs) provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family member.”(Bureau of Labor Statistics)I am interested in this field because I like to be able to help people with their problems. I was inspired to go into this field because I have had many medical problems throughout my life and I would like to be able to help people the way I was helped. I feel that being a nurse will give me the opportunity to meet new people and understand some of the issues that people deal with in everyday life. Becoming a nurse has been a long life goal of mine.
