Although I experienced many different aspects of care regarding health promotions this assignment will concentrate mainly on a single event that will stay with me throughout my nursing career. Perioperative nursing is the care of clients undergoing surgery. The term perioperative nursing is used to describe preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative nurses that work as a team to ensure proper surgical care is given. In the operating room, nursing care is provided by a circulating nurse and/or a scrub nurse. Circulating nurses manage the care of the patient undergoing surgery, they assist anesthesia, monitors for breaks in sterility technique and assists with the needs of the surgeon.
The purpose of this paper is for the nurse to complete a health assessment of a family by using Gordon’s 11 functional health patterns and the system’s approach. By using open ended questions for the 11 principals, the nurse can predict potential problems in the health perception, nutrition, elimination, activity-exercise, cognitive perception, rest-sleep, self perception/concept, role relationship, sexuality, coping, values and beliefs by evaluating the risk taking and behavioral patterns within the family. A nursing diagnosis and care plan can then be developed by using the data collected during the interview. The nurse can then provide health care interventions which will assist the family in obtaining optimal health (Edelman & Mandle, 2010). The family interviewed consists of five family members.
For example, if a resident was developing a pressure sore, it would be my responsibility to report this concern to the nurse on duty. If I did not report my concerns then I could be held responsible for the decline in that particular resident’s health. Thus, I have come to learn that care assistants, along with the nurses, are expected to take responsibility for the well-being, safety and care of not only the residents but for ourselves. As a care assistant, it is important to attend regular training sessions to develop the knowledge and understanding I have gained whilst working within the home and from the training I received at the commencement of my employment. According to the Royal College of Nursing, “many organisations provide robust and comprehensive training programmes for health care assistants.” However, in a study commissioned by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, it was noted that health care assistants have been reportedly undertaking tasks they have not received the training for; tasks that should be carried out under the supervision of a registered and qualified practitioner who has received the training for such a task.
The development of reflective review offers the practitioners a useful way to take responsibility for his or her clinical effectiveness. Johns (1995) has stated that the methods for managing quality in care needed to be devolved to the point of delivery and that this is an essential aspect of everyday practice. Reflection is used as means of exploring approaches to clinical supervision, clinical effectiveness and clinical governance, as well as reflecting on the participant’s skills. This essay describes a reflective experience while demonstrating a skill to deliver a presentation on Postoperative Care of the patient on return to ward. I will also discuss in this paper the reflective account on the evidence base for the chosen area of practice; a critical discussion about the practice in the chosen area; a critical evaluation of the presentation, including strengths and areas that needs to be developed; and a model or framework of reflection to be used.
Career Mapping In this essay I will briefly be describing the roles of a registered nurse, self evaluating myself by comparing personal transferable skills that I can bring into nursing. I will be looking at how to develop my skills that I am lacking in and discussing nursing career goals and opportunities I have learnt so far. The role of a nurse is very diverse, they have to be a care giver by assisting patients attending to their needs, communicator as they have to communicate with a range of people; patients and other healthcare professionals. Counsellor which is a process helping the patient recognise and cope with the problems.
