Valerie Corpening Introductory Speech Outline Dr. Vivien Thomas CM-214 Professor Serrie Kaplan University August 14, 2013 Topic: Dr. Vivien Thomas General Purpose: To inform Specific Purpose: To inform the audience how Thomas was the pioneer of how surgical techniques are used today. Thesis Statement: Overcoming adversity, Vivien Thomas developed techniques and assisted in groundbreaking procedures, which resulted in his surgical techniques being taught and used today. Introduction I. No one in medicine ever heard of or even attempted to perform open heart surgery, let alone opening the chest. But the first breakthrough came when a procedure was developed and performed on the first open heart surgery patient for Tetralogy of Fallot or better known as the baby-blue syndrome in 1944. II. We credited most of these accomplishments to Vivien Thomas an African American surgical technician. He was able replicated and developed techniques to use during the cardiac surgery under the supervision of his mentor and partners Dr. Blalok. Even though Thomas was not able to operate on human patients, he stood over Dr.Blalock directing him on the correct way to perfume the procedures; this surgery would not have been a success without Thomas guidance. III. Despite Vivien Thomas facing adversity from being an African-American, having no formal medical training and facing hardship in the time of economic poverty; Thomas continued to work under Dr. Blalock to help research, develop tools and techniques while assisting in cardiac surgical procedures. IV. As a respected pioneer of the surgical techniques used today, this presentation will explain how Vivien Thomas influenced a community, how he was able to overcome the obstacles of racism and while developing and assisting in ground breaking procedures with no medical training.
