Nursing school opened new horizons for my community involvement. Previous year I volunteered for Red Cross Blood Drive and obtained valuable experience in helping others with blood donations. This year I decided to volunteer at Open Door Health Clinic, Muncie, Indiana. I thought being almost graduate nursing student would expand my current experience level at other healthcare setting. Open Door is a non-profit Federally Qualified Health Center which provides comprehensive primary, urgent, and preventative healthcare to individuals and families through East Central Indiana regardless of their health insurance status, such as Medicare or Medicaid, disability claims, or other government-sponsored programs.
I am grateful for this, however, since sports have taught me to be confident, obedient, and disciplined. But with sports, come injuries; with injuries, come doctor visits. I spent the majority of my athletic career at the local physical therapists’ offices. Every doctor I worked with helped me recover from numerous injuries and assisted me in returning to play stronger than before. Because of this, I am a strong believer in recovery and the techniques utilized by physical therapists.

He is in the clinic, getting his six-month check up, lab and x-ray diagnostics done for his knee injury. M.P. and I have a nice rapport from his first visit. Since he is comfortable with me, he starts to vent a little. He explains to me how he was “let go” from his job because it was too much of an issue for “them to put him on light duty” because of his injury.

My choices in life have not always been easy. Graduating in 2002 with barely the schools requirements, I always considered myself an average student that always ended up putting school activities and functions before my classes. Coming close to graduation and the option of going into a nursing program at a local community college I set my life into a different direction and signed up 3 years of my life with Uncle Sam with the United States Army. Having my military career abruptly end after the second year I found myself more in hospitals rather than being able to train with my company. In the hospitals that I was serviced at, I was amazed on the professionalism that the medical staff gave its patients.
Physical therapy is the treatment of disease injury or deformation by treatments such as massages, heat treatments, ice, and physical exercise. This can be used to avoid surgery and drugs but it’s not always a complete alternative. Some patients go through surgery and then go to physical therapy to completely heal and relearn how to walk post-surgery. Physical therapy is a huge part of any recovery process because it helps you from developing further issues like authorities and other long term illnesses. When you go to places that offer physical therapy you can feel yourself regaining strength and healing with each visit.
Fewer volunteers, an expanding elderly population and high turnover in the EMT profession translate to a steady demand for EMT’s and paramedics over the coming years. According to www.salary.com, the average salary for EMT’s ranges from $22,340 to $34,925 per year, with a median yearly salary of roughly $29,000. I plan get a scholarship to a medical school and take classes there, I will most likely take a summer course to improve my skills. Like I said in my introduction I chose this career because I always wanted to be a paramedic. I enjoy watching TV shows about people saving other individuals lives and it really interested me how the professionals do it in real life.
