Christ in Discipleship Paper Introduction Making disciples for Christ or the great commission is the ultimate goal of Christianity. Thus, there is the need for the body of Christ to commit to this course. This is evident in Matthew 4 “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Discipleship comes with a price for all who call themselves Christians to pay, which is self-denial. Without self-denial, one cannot be a true worshipper and for that matter, a true disciple. In order for one to become like Jesus, one needs to learn to love, be humble, obedient, and selfless. These are the attributes that Jesus our Lord and Master exemplified. However, there are numerous Christians today who are not well armed with Gospel of Jesus Christ and thus, follow Jesus in ways that are very uncertain, shuttered, and sputtered. As a result, they are not staunch in the word to reproduce their faith let alone push forward the great commission. Because they are not so committed, they depend on their own understanding and live a life of pride, which is an attribute of the works of the flesh. This brings us to focal point of this paper, which is the importance of the centrality of Christ in Christian discipleship. It will further discuss how obedience reflects discipleship, the areas a disciple needs to submit to Christ; espouse on the 3 stages of discipleship according to Dempsey & Earley and how these stages work together to help disciples take the step of obedience. The Importance of the Centrality of Christ in Christian Discipleship Jesus Christ is the lighthouse for all believers or Christians. “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made” (John 1:3 NKJV). He is the only son of the Living God (Matthew 16:16 NKJV). He is the only way to God. For He said John 14:6 that, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the
