his futuristic scenario involves the intercultural communication between a scientist and state legislators. Thirty years from now, I am a renowned wetland scientist in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Virginia state legislature is going to vote whether or not to continue funding for wetland restoration efforts to improve the overall health of the Chesapeake Bay. I have been called upon to give expert testimony on the matter. It is my responsibility to give a presentation before the state senate on the current health of the Chesapeake Bay based on recent studies, the current status of restoration methods, what previous funding has been used for, and how it has contributed to the improvement of the general health of the Bay. As a result of our varied cultural backgrounds, we could have potential conflicts. To avoid these conflicts, I must employ several communication strategies to communicate competently. This ultimately involves forming a deep understanding of the groups represented in the audience, as well as identifying and being sensitive to the norms and values of these groups. Then, I must cater the aim and information in the presentation to the audience to make it more relevant and important to the groups. Incorporating various forms of media in the presentation aid in the communication process as well. All of these strategies, are varied forms of border crossings that are necessary when communicating in an intercultural setting. These border crossings help me to overcome the potential communication barriers associated with different cultures.
