Gandhi was neither super-human nor special or divine. Those that looked to him for direction really embraced and found strength in the idea that they were “human” just like him. Gandhi states that “Individual liberty and interdependence are both essential to life in society,” and he links these two ideas. Despite often being depicted as mutually exclusive, these two ideas are very much an integral part of the teachings that Gandhi tried to get his followers to understand and relate to. People, by their very existence, are meant to be free and maintain a level of individual liberty.
Chapter 3 “Huts on the Beach” Lord of the Flies In the beginning of the novel, the story begins with a group of boys living in a civilized island to whom they must obey to, which is Ralph. After a while, Jack feels that Ralph is not a good leader and he should take over the leadership of the people on the island. Jack then made a huge mistake by not having people by going off to hunt for the group instead of helping the group watch and keep the fire one. “I’m going off by myself. He can catch his own pigs. Anyone who want so hunt when I do can come too” (Golding, 178).

The glasses, however, help illustrate his intellectual strength, his ability to think situations over logically and use reason. In the middle of the war an airplane carrying school boys crashes over a tropic island. Two of the boys, Ralph and Piggy find a conch and using it as a horn gather the rest of the survivors. The group of boys have to deal with changes as they slowly get used to the isolated freedom from the world they once knew. The boys attempt to create an organized society, but it deteriorates as their primal, savage instincts start to consume them. Seemingly irrelevant objects actually represent significant concepts. When freed from the bonds and expectations of society, their true human nature reveals itself. The beast, the conch shell, and the signal fire all epitomize this theme.
