In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, there were a lot of characters in the story line. Each character had an impact on the story both positively and negatively. One of the main characters in the novel was Piggy. Piggy symbolized the adult of the group of boys and always thought in reality. In the book, Piggy uses scientific intelligence throughout the novel and impacts the book in three ways: he helped to find a way to start a fire, became friends with Ralph, and aggravated Jack and his followers. First, Piggy impacts the novel by helping Jack and Ralph start the fire in the beginning of the story. In order for the boys to have hope of being rescued and cook their food, they needed to create a fire. Piggy’s glasses become very important as the story continues and eventually symbolizes mathematics and science just like Piggy. “Piggy! Have you got any matches?” The other boys took up the cry till the mountain rang. Piggy shook his head and come to the pile. “My! You’ve made a big heap haven’t you?” Jack pointed suddenly. “His specs- use them as burning glasses!” (Page 40) As we see in the beginning of the story, Piggy becomes an impact on someone’s life. Ralph and Piggy meet each other after the plane crash and realize they have to bring the boys together for a meeting. Piggy becomes Ralph’s advisor and best friend while they are on the island. When Piggy dies, Ralph feels like a part of him is missing when he makes decisions and creates thoughts. “We can use this (the conch shell) to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us-“He beamed at Ralph (Page 16) After the group of boys create a small government and elect Ralph as chief, Piggy became an impact on Jack’s character. Jack does not like Piggy because he supports and stands by Ralph. He also hurts Piggy mentally and physically by calling him names,
