Shaakirah Keith April 17, 2012 Golding wrote a novel called Lord of the Flies explaining the adventure of a group of schoolboys who settled on an unknown island after a plane crash. It comes to be that there are no adults, except for the pilot, but to bad he's no where to be found. The boys have to learn how to survive on their own and make choices for theirselves since there are no adults around. Not only that, but take responsibility by looking after one another since there are children as young as six years old. Ralph and Piggy, discover a conch shell on the beach, which later becomes important to the boys and has an even bigger meaning behind it.
In William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, the main character, Ralph is a natural born leader who tries to keep civilization amongst the schoolboys. If Ralph doesn’t keep the others civilized, then they all will become savages. When Ralph was first introduced, one could see his excellent sense of observation. Observation is a key to become a good leader. Ralph was chosen as the leader.
He believes that as long as they stay civilized they can easily survive, live in harmony, and eventually be rescued. “We’ve got to have rules and obey them,” (42). Ralph insists on having rules on the island and at first Jack agrees with him although his jealousy for Ralph’s power drives him to constantly undermine and disobey Ralph and his requests. By blowing the conch Ralph can call a meeting whenever he likes, to discuss issues and give orders. “‘Ralph sat on a fallen tree
They believe in keeping the signal fire a top priority so their chances of being saved are much greater. Some ideas that are civilized on the island are choosing a leader, the conch shell, signal fire, and building shelter. On the other hand, the uncivilized characters are Jack and Roger. Jack is power hungry and wants to be leader, not for the good of the boys, but so he has all the power. He doesn’t care for civilization.
There are certain obligations that go along with the role of being a son. Not all families will run things in the same ways, but most would agree that the son has the following responsibilities. They should always treat their parents with respect in a way of saying thank you for taking care of their needs. The son should obey their commands for their own benefit. Since it takes two people to make a relationship possible, the son should also make as much of an effort as the parent in keeping that relationship a positive one.
In this book, he portrays such a focused character, because he is always thinking and he is always finding ways to keep everyone controlled. When they first got to the island, they were all panicked and afraid. Here Ralph steps up and lays down some simple rules for the boys to follow
Psychology is seeing behavior and mental processes from multiple view points. It can be analyzed by Sigmund Freud’s ideas which are id, ego and superego. All these can be found in the book, Lord of the Flies by William Golding. The book is about a group of British boys stuck on a deserted island who try to govern themselves, with disastrous results. They needed someone to lead, so two boys, Jack and Ralph, had been voted by the other kids to lead the two separated groups, which were created by the boys themselves.
Like a pack of kids!’ By now they were listening to the tirade. ‘How can you expect to be rescued if you don’t put first things first and act proper?” (Page 45) This quote shows how Piggy is trying to get all of their attention in order to tell the boys what they should. His ideas always seem to make the most sense, but have trouble getting his messages through. I believe that Piggy would actually make the best leader out of the boys, but his physical appearance is what sets his leadership skills apart from ralph. Simon Throughout the novel, Simon remains as a flat and static character.
The whole purpose of the conch was to enforce the rules that the boys placed on themselves so that they could maintain a civilized attitude. “We’ve got to have rules and obey them. After all, we’re not savages. We’re English, and the English are best at everything,” (Golding 42). At the beginning of the novel all of the children base their actions on rules that their fellow English men would follow, and in order to make these rules significant the children would use the conch as a symbol of authority.

In the novel, Lord of the Flies, a group of boys are stranded on an island. There are no adults to watch over them, so they have to create rules and distribute roles. One rule that the group has decided on is that whenever they blow the conch, a meeting is being called and whoever is holding the conch is the speaker and no one else should be speaking. Ralph is the leader of the group, he assigns roles and watches over the whole group.
