Chapter 3 “Huts on the Beach” Lord of the Flies In the beginning of the novel, the story begins with a group of boys living in a civilized island to whom they must obey to, which is Ralph. There are conflicts and such happening between them. By using the conch and staying in the platform, we came to know how obedient the boys are for following the rules that they have made and putting it aside to the society. This is how the story relates to Ralph as he is planning to build huts to start another civilization. Conflicts gathered around because of Jack and Ralph. It had started since the Election Day for who is to become leader of this survival, and is still happening now. For this chapter, loads of conflicts and arguments aroused as each one came up with different opinions and thoughts. Both Jack and Ralph are different towards each other and they don’t have much in common. Jack is the type of person who is up for nature and food while Ralph is more of the civilization and sociable in economical situation. Despite all, Ralph is the main leader of this civilization. He controls nearly everything and he created rules to manage everything coordinately. For example: “We’ll have rules, lots of rules!” As said by Ralph. This quote is showing how organized he is and wants to keep everything in a well mannered. For Jack’s point of view, hunting and nature is most important. It’s because it’s important for the boys to live well during this survival. His characteristic in this chapter shows a new side of him. At times, Jack can be very demanding and urges other to do stuff he wants. A quote which resembles this fact is -- “I said have you got any water? I’m thirsty.” In some parts of the chapter, Jack has gotten a strange feeling that someone or something is following him; but he doesn’t know what it is and can’t even take a look at it.
