Burger King: A New Service Design “Have it your way” is the common phrase used by Burger King to promote their business and how they make their Whopper burgers. However, a phrase is not what keeps a company in business. So how does a company like Burger King originate? What has kept them in business all this time? What new service could be developed to improve the business or take it to the next level? Burger King was founded in 1954 by James Mclamore and David Edgerton. Both of these men having already been in the restaurant business knew what they needed to do to make a restaurant run successfully. The first restaurant was in Miami, Florida and was originally called Insta Burger King because they wanted people to get the idea of food being ready while on the go. While Burger King may not be as popular as McDonalds, it still has over 11,000 restaurants and spans over 65 different countries. The majority of all BK franchises are run by family businesses or independent owners rather that major enterprises. The founders did this in order to make for a more welcoming feeling when the customer arrives at the restaurant. The first concept for the founders was to attract the growing number of families with a reasonably-priced broiled hamburger that could be served quickly. This idea, however, was not unique because at the same time McDonalds started their first drive-in. So the founders went even farther and became the first chain to offer dining rooms. A few years later they expanded their menu and introduced the Whopper, which was a burger with sauce, cheese, lettuce, pickles, and tomato, for people with a bigger desire for food. The price of a hamburger was 18 cents and the price of a Whopper was 37 cents in order to stay competitive with the fast food industry.
