If one window is broken out of an abandoned house, and no one says anything or reports it then others will be broken out to just the simple fact because no did anything about it. No one took action, which shows or gives criminals the idea that no cares enough to address the problem. In the mid-l970s The State of New Jersey announced a “Safe and Clean Neighborhoods Program,” designed to improve the quality of community life in twenty-eight cities. As part of that program, the state provided money to help cities take police officers out of their patrol cars and assign them to walking beats. The governor and other state officials were enthusiastic about using foot patrol as a way of cutting crime, but many police chiefs were skeptical.
Eventually from neglecting that issue one broken window then evolves into numerous other broken windows. This disorder is then left unattended which will clearly suggest that no one cares about the problem. From that point the degenerates of the streets become attracted to that particular area and this invites further disorder and more serious crimes to appear. Policing in neighborhoods should be based on an understanding of the connection between order maintenance and crime prevention. This implies that if disorderly behaviors in public places such as petty vandalism, begging, vagrancy, prostitution, drug dealing, loitering and murder are regulated then a significant drop in serious crime will follow.
This “broken windows” policy eventually fueled the community policing movements, and also the evolution of community prosecution, community courts, and community probation and parole. ( Walker and Katz 317-317) In 1982, Kelling and Wilson published an article titled “ Broken Windows” in the Atlantic Monthly magazine. This article definitely popularized the idea that neighborhoods that neglected minor signs of decay and disorder were welcoming more serious crime into their neighborhood. According to Wilson and Kelling, “ a broken window left unintended is a sign that nobody cares, and invites more broken windows, so disorderly behavior leads to fear of crime, more serious crime, and ultimately, urban decay.” So, to sum it up, one broken window plus one more broken window, will equal the whole building with broken windows. This “ Broken Windows” article has been reproduced more than any other article in Atlantic’s history.
The manipulated our mind with fear and this fear grew in us. For instance, whenever my mom or dad were coming back from work and we are playing or sitting around doing nothing reasonable; once we hear the sound of their car parking in the garage, we pretend to be studying because we knew the consequences of our act. It is either we get manual labor or they ground us from going outside that weekend. This act continued to the extent my class mates noticed it and they started asking questions why we never get to play with them during weekdays after school except on the weekends. At that age we never gave them a better answer for their question because we never knew the good my parents was doing to us.
Broken windows is based on a theory first introduced by James Q. Wilson and George L. Kelling in 1982 called “Broken Windows”. The article first appeared in a March edition of Atlanta Monthly, basically stating that identifying problem areas and repairing them early enough will prevent said problems from escalating into more serious crime. (Wilson and Kelling, 1982) Wilson and Kelling pointed out that neighborhoods with worn, unkempt buildings, graffiti, and yes, broken windows, sends the message that the neighborhood is uncared for, and thus delinquents and deviants can run rampant without fear of reprisal or arrest. In short, indifference leads to urban decay. Law abiding citizens will hide, afraid to leave their homes, feeling vulnerable to crime and abandoned by their police department.
A conflict in the story is when Bobinot and Bibi were at the store and worried about Calixta because she was at home alone. Another conflict in the story was between Alcee and Calixta when Alcee has to stay at Calixta’s house during the storm and their attraction to each other. Another conflict was when Bobinot and Bibi were coming home and was worried if they will look presentable enough to Calixta. The first conflict was resolved by waiting at the store then going home to go check on Calixta. The second conflict I listed was resolved by Calixta and Alcee have an affair, but being much happier and supportive in their marriages.
On past Halloweens, the local kids have broken windows, and worse, so I need someone to stay there the whole night to make sure no harm comes to my building. I will pay $3000 for anybody willing to do this, but I must be completely honest and disclose the fact that previous house sitters have run out of the house in the middle of the night because they were convinced the house was haunted by ghosts. Some of them were so scared that they went completely crazy and had to be committed to a mental institution. If you have the courage to accept this job, please call me. –Dick Shore, 917-555-1221 Finish this story.
The authors of the Broken Window Theory state that in the 1960’s there was a high sense of fear and disorder. The communities felt they had no direct way to protect themselves and did not or could not move, it was not an option for most people in underlying crime ridden neighborhoods. More and more people started to protect themselves by purchasing guns and knives or other means of defense. Riots and disorder were taking place therefore people focused on these things and more and more of it became prevent. The portion of society that chose not to by weapons would lock themselves in their homes and only leave when absolutely needed.
There are even reports of scams from such types working for bogus business identities with no business license or physical place of business. These shady types work out of their trucks and take money from unknowing home owners. Roofing contractors should also be properly licensed, insured and bonded. This protects you, the home owner, from any damage to your home during their work. Whether you decide on roofing repairs, a re-roof, or a completely new roof installation, building permits will be required by your city.

I am just a simple store owner and I have been assaulted by the events going on around me. Who would have thought that a possible drunk driving incident would have started all the chaos that I have seen. I live and work in this small neighborhood.
