Blackfish Speaker | The speakers in this film were mainly former employees of SeaWorld and SeaLand who are strongly opposed to the company’s methods and values. They believe that the treatment of the orcas at the park is cruel and needs to be changed immediately. I think the speakers can be trusted because they were former workers of the cooperation who, from first hand experience, know exactly what is happening in the park. | Occasion | This documentary was released in 2013, but I think the event that inspired the creation of the film was the death of Dawn Brancheau in 2010 by Tilikum, the park’s most famous 12,000-pound orca. SeaWorld executives claimed that Tilikum grabbed ahold of Dawn’s ponytail and drug her in. They also say that…show more content…
The documentary begins with the birth of the orca over two decades ago. It then proceeds to show a series of events that lead to the progression of Tilikum’s aggressive behavior. As the film explores the psychosis of a killer whale, such as Tilikum, who has been in captivity for most of his life, it becomes evident to the audience that the injuries and deaths of many SeaWorld trainers were essentially inevitable. When I was a little girl, I always thought that animals were better off on display; while safe in the confined space, any sort of predator couldn’t attack them. However, this film especially opened my eyes to the brutal reality. Animals are being pushed further and further into insanity and then being blamed for their behavior, when in reality, it’s only natural for them to act aggressively. They are being attacked by their own species. They are taken from their families and forced to give a flawless performance multiple times a day. It is barbaric. The film shows a scene where a baby orca is taken from her mother and all the mom is left to do is weep in the corner by herself for her newborn kin. My heart broke for the orcas that were constantly being blamed for any tank related incident when in reality the fault lies with the SeaWorld cooperation itself. One particular scene that struck me as incredibly shocking was when SeaWorld first opened they had an area for the orcas to sleep that was built a set size. As the orcas grew, the area did not expand. The animals were squeezed into a claustrophobic holding cell every night where they had to spend 2/3 of their lives. That is not caring for the animals; that is treating them as if they are simply stacked boxes in a storage closet. The film as
