Today, I’m going to be discussing the biological approach to treating phobic disorders, quite obviously in this method of treating these disorders, there are two types of chemotherapy (drugs) which are used. Firstly, anti-anxiety drugs are one of the two drugs which are prescribed to patients suffering with the disorders. Benzodiazepines are quite commonly used to help relieve symptoms of anxiety. Benzodiazepines work by slowing down activity of the central nervous system by acting as a ligand for GABA(a) receptors mimicking the response of the release of GABA in the brain causing similar effects of calmness/ decreased agitation and mild sedation through decreased excitatbility and reduced communication between neurons. Kahn et al (1986) supported the use of benzodiazepines and found that they were more effective than a placebo treatment in relieving anxiety.
Paranoia, delusional thinking, affective flattering, and possible disorganization of the thought process are all symptoms of schizophrenia. Author, Elizabeth A. Richter, believes that people with schizophrenia can choose to cure themselves. Elizabeth A. Richter claims that 25% of people with schizophrenia will recover spontaneously without therapy. Some reliability that the author has is being that she was previously diagnosed with schizophrenia. Her experiences are personal and she uses a few famous people who suffered from the disease as examples as well.
You can get better. There are options to treating generalized anxiety disorder, and the main two ways that it is treated are; medications and psychotherapy. Some of the medications you may be prescribed to help with the symptoms are: Buspirone, which is an anti-anxiety medication, antidepressants, which are used to influence neurotransmitters in the brain, benzodiazepines, which is a sedative used in limited instances, and the use of psychotherapy or psychological counseling of underlying life stresses and making behavioral changes. There are also options out there for people who prefer a safer or more home remedied approach to a cure or help with symptoms. If you have been diagnosed with this disorder, you can use kava which is an herb said to provide relaxation without sedation, but you should not take this if you have a liver condition.
Unit 4222-368 Understand the administration of medication to individuals with dementia using a person centred approach (DEM 305) Outcome 1 Understand the common medications used to treat symptoms of dementia 1.1 Outline the most common medications used to treat symptoms of dementia * Donepezil, Rivastigmine * tranquilliser or an antipsychotic medicine * Anti-depressants * Sleeping tablets 1.2 Describe how commonly used medications affect individuals with dementia Donepezil and Rivastigmine are medicines used to prevent the breakdown of a brain chemical called acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is needed for the nerve cells in the brain to work properly. Also helps with memory. Antipsychotics are medicines that can be used to treat behaviour, such as aggression or agitation. Anti-depressants may be advised if depression is suspected.
Ebixa is not an ACE inhibitor, but blocks a chemical called glutamate from damaging brain cells. a) Explain when antipsychotic drugs might be used to relieve symptoms for an individual with dementia. Antipsychotic drugs might be used to relieve symptoms of aggression, restlessness, depression, wandering, confusion, hallucinations, and tearfulness, these are only to be used when other interventions such as walking, chatting, social interactions and activities, removal of triggers affecting behaviour. They need to be prescribed and administered under the NICE (National Institute of Health and Care Excellence) guidelines; NICE is the Government body that is responsible for assessing the cost and clinical effectiveness of drug treatments and producing guidance of which treatments should be funded by the National Health Service. They also need to be frequently reviewed whilst in use and only used as a last resort.

Reading the article Are Antipsychotic Medication the treatment of choice for people with Psychosis I was able to enjoy two different point of view of this critical issue. In one side which is called the positive side by Psychiatrist E. Fuller Torrey from Surviving Schizophrenia: A Manual for Families, Consumers, and Providers, 4th ed. (Quill, 2001) I found a fact the Schizscientists and clinicians alike imagined that antipsychotic medications would "cure" schizophrenia, or at the very least, help severely disturbed patients who ahs been out of control. It was recently reported that people who has using antipsychotic medications as well their widespread use. Another fact I found is the reality that Antipsychotic drugs has become one of the
Outline and evaluate the Biological model The Biological model of abnormality suggests that mental illnesses resembles physical illness and can be treated in similar ways using drugs and other forms of medication. Doctors then attempt to treat a mental illness as they would treat a physical one by treating the symptoms. The main problem with this technique would be the fact they are only treating the symptoms and not the cause of the illness which will mean the illness will not improve. This model relates to five areas which may cause mental illnesses: infection, genes, neurochemicals and neuroanatomy. Infection may be the cause of some mental illnesses e.g.
Drugs are used to prevent flares, treat flares when they do occur, and minimize complications (“X-Plain”). Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used to treat people with joint or chest pain or fever. Antimalarials, originally used to treat malaria, are another common drug used to treat lupus. Studies have shown that continuous treatment with antimalarials prevent flares from occurring, and treat fatigue, joint pain, skin rashes, and inflammation of the lungs. However, the basis of lupus treatment involves corticosteroids, a drug related to cortisol, a natural anti-inflammatory hormone.
Since the anxiety is also typically accompanied by medical issues like nausea, body aches, and fatigue it can be difficult to narrow down the cause of the symptoms. Luckily, there are several treatment options for those who have been diagnosed with GAD. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that is commonly used to treat anxiety. CBT is beneficial because it helps the patient recognize when they are misreading events, and forming negative assumptions based on little or no evidence (2011). In addition CBT focuses on the behavioral side of anxiety by offering problem solving skills, setting goals, and establishing priorities.
