1. What are the basic objectives of advertising? What are the advertising objectives of Benetton? The basic objectives of advertising are to secure, develop, innovate and create advertisements to sell a product. This is done by informing, persuading, and reminding customers of a product. Advertising also builds brand equity, The advertising objectives of Benetton are not to sell more but communicate the company’s values. Benetton focuses on social and political issues. Benetton focused on carrying out corporate social responsibility, creating a distinct image, brand awareness, and serving a global audience. 2. Discuss the pros and cons of the shock advertising campaign that Benetton used for many years. The pros of shock advertising for Benetton includes: increased attention, benefits memory for customers, and informs customers on social and political happenings. The cons of shock advertising include: turning customers off, desensitizing people, and losing business. 3. Oliviero Toscani has defended Benetton’s use of shock advertising by noting that it constitutes nothing less than a debate between advertising and art. He argues that potentially offensive images are acceptable in the world of art and journalism while in other realms such as advertising they are not. Do you agree with Toscani’s position? I do agree with Toscani’s position. I especially liked his statement about Life and Time magazine’s covers. Life and Time magazines are trying to sell their product. That is the same thing Benetton was doing. Benetton’s communication strategy was different and shocking but it did stick to their beliefs. I like the fact he used political and social events for his advertising. At the same time I understand how some people may feel some of the pictures were inappropriate.
