It is through the developments and reactions broadly connected to the laws and initiatives that shaped what would rather be known as deinstitutionalization (Young, 2010). The Great Depression and the war during the 1930s to the middle 1940s, had drained resources, resulted in lack of staffing and overcrowding of patients in state hospitals. The World War II had resulted in increased psychiatric casualties of combat and compelled a greater need of trained mental health professionals (Brekke, 2012). In 1949, counsel of state government had discussed the over crowded and dreadful condition of state asylums throughout the country. The council recommended concerning the custody and care of the chronically mentally ill, that the substantial number of institutionalized patient may benefit from community oriented care (Young, 2010).

Runnnig head: ADHD – SHOULD WE MEDICATE OR NOT Introduction Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has become an epidemic in the United States amongst our children. It is such an epidemic that many people are concerned if our children are being misdiagnosed with a mental disorder instead of a behavior problem. In addition, many doctors and parents are choosing to medicate children diagnosed with ADHD rather than seeking alternative therapies. The decision rather to medicate the child or not is a difficult decision. ADHD is a disorder that affects both children and adults.
