Allison Wynn H. Pre-Calculus January 27th, 2014 Anesthesiology I am very interested in becoming an anesthesiologist. “Anesthesiologists are medical doctors who care for patients before, during and immediately following a surgical or medical procedure by administering appropriate anesthesia and monitoring the patients for reactions and complications, and to ensure comfort and manage pain.” An anesthesiologist's job description is not limited to a traditional surgical setting in a hospital or medical center. Today, anesthesiologists have many options available to them, including work in dental offices, outpatient surgical centers, labor and delivery units, pain management clinics, critical and intensive care units, teaching, and research. The biology (BS) major at UNC Chapel Hill will prepare me for this career path while taking chemistry courses as well. The department requirements include BIOL 101/101L which are gateway courses, BIOL 201, 202, and 205 which are the core courses, one organismal structure and diversity course, and four biology electives of which two have to be lab classes. Additional STEM requirements include taking CHEM 102/102L, 241/241L, 261, 262/262L, PHYS 104 and 105, or 116 and 117 which are chemistry and physics classes, two additional Allied Science courses which are courses in biology, natural science or math. Lastly, you also have to complete foundation classes in math and science including MATH 231, one of the following: MATH 232; COMP 110, 116; STOR 155 or 215, and physical and life sciences courses including CHEM 101 and CHEM 101L.
