Both Appiah and Foer analyze "us v. them" mentalities--that is, how cultural groups often define themselves by what they aren't. Identify some of the cultural groups to which you belong (remember "cultural groups" can form around anything--from ethnicity to religion to hobbies). Then, discuss the extent to which these cultural groups define themselves in relation to others. I think the best example I have is for “vs them”. I currently live in South Carolina, Mount Pleasant to be exact. Apparently it’s where everyone is snotty and stuck up. Most of them come from some higher end moneymaking jobs, or something. They’re rude, inconsiderate and always wearing the newest things. They look down on you for not wearing the newest most expensive clothes as well as if you aren’t actually from SC, but a transplant. I say these things but I do live there. It’s gorgeous, convenient and a quick drive to my 2 other jobs. I grew up in the river valley in a small New England town. We learned about ethos, logos and pathos back at the beginning of the class to write a persuasive essay, which is what he is trying to do. It works nicely, even though I really don’t have a soccer experience to relate to, I can almost envision his upbringing and it allows me to understand the writing. He supports his ideas by comparing America and the rest of the world. America is not as big into soccer as most countries but at one point or another we’ve all dabbled in it. This helps breakdown the barriers into a more cohesive society. Some people like it some don’t. But every one can relate to
