Stupid In America, or Helpless In America? In today’s world, we are all about advancement. From cell phones to television sets, technology in our society is constantly expanding and reaching new horizons. Even as we speak, thousands upon thousands of dollars are being poured into funds for new technology. In the eyes of some people, this is a good investment. Unfortunately, they cannot see that other areas that are very important to our future are being neglected. John Stossel’s opinion article entitled, “Stupid in America,” states that the public school system in the United States is not advancing whatsoever because the government isn’t actually concerned with the education of America’s youth. This is troubling news because even though new technology and innovations are important, they cannot create themselves and require an educated generation for their invention. An uneducated generation equals no future advancement. The article begins with the statement, “…spending has gone through the roof and test scores are flat.” Stossel implies with this very simple statement that even with all the government spending in the education sector, actual test scores from students have remained unchanged. While unaffected test scores wouldn’t be so bad for a simple two or three year period, he goes on to state that it has remained this way since 1970, the year they began measuring this statistic. In this same section he brings out one of the most important points in the whole article: “…most every other service in life has gotten faster, better and cheaper, one of the most important things we buy – education – has remained completely stagnant…” Stossel knows that education has the ability to advance, yet does not see it in the current system.
