November 12, 2012 Icon Project Lance Armstrong is the greatest cyclist in history and symbolizes greatness. Lance is a heroic cancer survivor and has legendary athletic achievements that had placed him in a position that no other athlete in history has occupied. We all wore those yellow Livestrong bracelets when we were younger; Lance had established the Livestrong Foundation that gives out those bracelets, which is a charitable organization that plays a key role in fighting cancer. The country mourned his loss figuratively when it was worldwide known that Lance had been accused of taking enhanced-performing drugs. Lance also did not deny the allegation; therefore it gave some his ‘fans’ the impression that he had used them to enhance his performance.
In 1991, the Settimana Bergamasca Race, at 21 he was World Road Race Champion in Oslo Norway, 1993. October 2, 1996, then aged 25; he was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer. By this time, it spread to his lungs, abdomen, lymph nodes and brain. Given 50/50% chance of survival, removal of his testicles along with Chemo Therapy, he is now cancer free. Lance Armstrong won the Tour De France seven times, following this crisis.
For my essay I chose Terry Fox. I chose him because he is a true hero. He raised more than $360 million for cancer research and awareness by running ultramarathons through the Marathon of Hope organizations with an artificial leg. Clearly, Terry Fox, who ran over 42 km a day through wind and snow with an artificial leg, displayed the characteristics of a true hero who set a standard of excellence, raised money for cancer research, and most of all, inspired people to never give up their dreams or hopes. He was an inspiration for people to never give up on their hopes and dreams.
Lance Edward Gunderson was born on Sept. 18,1971, in Plano, Texas. And in 1974, his mother married Terry Armstrong, who eventually adopted lance. At a very young age lance was competing in triathlons and marathons, and eventually started his career in 1992 as a member of the Motorola cycling team. I can go on and on about all the trophies he had won and the awards he has gotten; but i want to tell you how his career and actions have impacted America’s society Socially, Economically and Culturally. In this paragraph i'm going to talk about how Lance Armstrong impacted the American Society socially.
Lance Armstrong: His Fall from Grace Lance Edward Armstrong was idolized; he was the ultimate superhuman, an Ironman. As a child athlete and national triathlon champion, Armstrong was a definite trailblazer. Armstrong won the Tour de France a record setting seven consecutive times between 1999 and 2005. Pro Championship. Lance Armstrong also cheated death at the young age of 25. He won the battle against cancer when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer that then spread to his lungs and brain (Rose & Fisher, 2014). Lance vowed to return to the cycling world someday and that he did. Taking with him the hearts of Americans.
The Ethical Dilemma of Oscar Pistorius “You can succeed at anything if you put your mind to it.” This statement seems to be one that we hear endlessly as we grow older. Sometimes this is proven true, as could be perceived from the case of Oscar Pistorius. Oscar is an Olympic sprinter, with one big difference from his competition-both of his legs are non-existent below the knee. Instead of legs, he uses a folded metal spring mechanism that acts in the same way as a human calf and foot. Pistorius was born with a congenital disease that caused him to have both of his legs amputated just below his knees when he was less than a year old.
It takes more than just talent to become an accomplished athlete. Individuals who excel in sporting activities often do so because they go to the extreme with hard work and effort, both in their everyday practice sessions and game play or events. It is through setting personal goals to stretch their own achievements, that their outstanding drive becomes recognized by all others. Athletic heroes are also known for overcoming injuries received in play, while many athletes have had their career come to an end through unfortunate injuries. Athletic heroes often become acknowledged by their brilliant performance sometimes surpassing what can be considered human expectations.
Ali’s work ethic and determination is something that I truly admire and value. As I play sports and wish to become the best I can be, the standard Ali set is certainly admirable. Even those who are not fans of Ali’s cannot deny the fact that he has more pride then any athlete known today. “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee!” are words that have ringed throughout the decades since Ali spoke them. However, in my eyes it is not just the pre-fight jingles or quotes which illustrate Ali’s pride.
My family raised me to be a strong and good person and I love them so much, especially my mom. My mom has been my best friend ever since the day I was born. I would hate to lose her. Without her, I don’t know what I’d do since she's the one who brought me into this world. Also, my dad has always been there to help me make tough decisions and I love him a lot.
