The phrase, “greatest of all time”, are words rarely spoken but greatly treasured when heard. My hero Muhammad Ali is undoubtedly known as the greatest boxer who ever lived and some argue that he is simply the greatest athlete of all time. A hero is a man or woman noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed. Ali has fulfilled this depiction in its entirety. Muhammad Ali is my hero because of the standard he set as an athlete, the pride he possesses and allocates, and because of the love he incorporates within his approach to life. Even as a young boy named Cassius Clay, Ali showed signs of impeccable dedication and a willingness to succeed. At age 12, Clay had his bike stolen and he was extremely displeased. He even found a policeman and said he was going to “whoop” whoever had stolen his bike. Whether by chance or by fate, this policeman, Joe Martin, turned out to be a youth boxing trainer and he took young Clay under his wing. Over the next six years, Clay would win six Kentucky Golden Gloves championships, two national Golden Gloves titles, and two AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) crowns. Joe Martin himself once said “He was a kid willing to make any sacrifice to achieve something worthwhile in sports. It was impossible to discourage him”. Ali’s work ethic and determination is something that I truly admire and value. As I play sports and wish to become the best I can be, the standard Ali set is certainly admirable. Even those who are not fans of Ali’s cannot deny the fact that he has more pride then any athlete known today. “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee!” are words that have ringed throughout the decades since Ali spoke them.
