Air Pollution in New York City Team B [pic] Statement of the Problem: Air Pollution in New York City What is “Air Pollution?” Air pollution, according to the definition provided by the Environmental Protection Agency, it states, “the air is polluted when it contains enough unhealthy particles and gases to harm people, animals, plants and even objects, such as buildings and statues. Air pollution can be present as a solid, liquid, or gas...” (EPA, 2006). Air pollution in its solid state is known as Particulate Matter: 1. Dust: pieces of sand and dirt that is trapped with oxygen. We can see the sand or dirt as it travels through the air 2. Ashes: pieces of debris from burning elements that is trapped in the air. Anything that is burnt the flying pieces that are caught in the air 3. Soot: a black dust that is created when we burn wood or fossil fuels like coal, diesel, and oil. When you see black smoke coming from a big truck or bus, that smoke contains a lot of soot form the diesel fuel that truck or bus is burning in its engine. You can also see soot coming from chimneys of houses in your neighborhood. Air Pollution in its liquid state: 1. Carbon Dioxide: the principle greenhouse gas emitted as a result of human activity. The burning of coal, oil and natural gas. This pollutant comes in both liquid and solid forms. 2. Chlorofluorocarbons: chemicals used fro refrigeration and air conditioning. The release of chlorofluorocarbons emissions and eliminating the and use if ozone destroying chemicals 3. Volatile Organic compounds: found in all living
