Pedram Ghodrati Essay Three Writing 122 Air Pollution in Tehran An easy way to define air pollution, anything harmful that goes to the air, makes air pollution. Humans cause 90% of air pollution. The largest contributor to air pollution is the burning of fossil fuels such as gas and coal. The accumulation in the atmosphere of substances can also cause air pollution which, in sufficient concentrations, endanger human health or produce other measured effects on living matter and other materials. Other major factors that make air pollution problem worst include: power and heat generation, the burning of solid wastes, industrial processes, and, especially, transportation. The six major types of air pollutants are carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, particulates, sulfur dioxide, and photochemical oxidants. Air pollution has been a major issue in Tehran, the capital of Iran. Three articles have been summarized, which evaluate the causes of air pollution in Tehran, the health concerns while explaining short-term and long-term remedies that the government of Iran has suggested. Air over Iran's capital is among the most polluted in the world, health experts say many Iranians suffer serious health problems as a result. Most of the pollution comes from vehicles on the congested roads of the rapidly growing metropolis of more than 12 million people, and the level of pollutants far exceeds World Health Organization standards. Each year, the 1.4 million vehicles in the city pump an estimated 5 million tons of CO2 into the air, according to the Tehran mayor's office. Tehran has a similar geographical position to Los Angeles and Mexico City – two other cities that experience heavy air pollution.
