Ageism is the act of people discriminating against others just because of their age. Most of the time people think ageism is just against the elderly. They can no longer be put away because their families do not want to be embarrassed or not want to deal with a disabled child or family member. They also have rights and regulations that others have to follow or there will be repercussions to others actions. They can not be discriminated against for getting a job that they are suitable for. They can not be told that they can not have housing for any other reason except the ability to pay their rent. So the ADA provides disabled people with the opportunities others also receive. • How have people with disabilities been treated in the past? People with disabilities in the past where treated horribly. They basically had no rights at all. What happened to them was left up to their families and they had no say so at all. They where institutionalized and left there to die. Their families did not want the stigma of having a child or family member who was disabled so they hid the "problem". Where it be in a mental institution or in their homes. It was as if they had no value because of the way they where born. What is being done to address those issues in my opinion not enough. It would be a raise in Social Security Insurance or disability checks or a raise in the wage gap so people could actually live instead of worry about making it each month. As well as adding to the educational grants so a lot more people can further their education to better themselves and their lives. Basically give them the same as everyone else so they have a fighting chance like everyone else does. • What types of legislation have been introduced to address issues faced by people with disabilities? The types of legislation that has been introduced to address issues faced by people with disabilities are the American Disability Act which improved the lively hood of many people. Especially compared to what the past was for disabled people. The ADA was a big step in the right direction but, more needs to be done. More educational grants so the job market opens up more and that would lead to better pay wages and a way to supplement their income so their lives are improved as
