Abortion: Pro-Choice or No-Choice “No woman wants an abortion as she wants an ice cream cone or a Porsche. She wants an abortion as an animal caught in a trap wants to gnaw off its own leg” (Think Exist, pg 3). Women should be able to have a choice. Abortions give women this choice, so there should be no reason to ever make abortions illegal. Pro-abortion is the belief in the right to choose to terminate a fetus. “Since January 22, 1973 the Supreme Court legalized abortion in all 50 states, with the case Roe vs. Wade” (Heritage House ’76). Why should we try and change this now? Abortion methods have matured from black alley abortions, to abortion clinics in all 50 states performing abortions up to 24 weeks after fertilization. Opinions on abortion vary for numerous reasons, but under certain circumstances, abortion may be the most appropriate action to take. “Approximately one-half of the 6.4 million pregnancies in 2001 in the United States were unplanned”(Henshaw, pg 90). That is about three million unplanned pregnancies. “These three million unplanned pregnancies include 1.3 million pregnancies that ended in abortion; 1.4 million live births that women reported were unplanned at the time of conception; and 411,000 miscarriages of unplanned pregnancies” (Henshaw, pg 91). Who really experience these unplanned pregnancies? The answer is women between the ages of 20 and 24 if you go by age or unmarried women if you go by marital status. If abortion is outlawed that could also mean there will be more teenagers having children. I agree that abortion should not be a form of birth control, but if something does happen there should be the option of abortion so that the wrong mother doesn’t have to raise a child at such a young…show more content…
If a woman has to travel to another country to have a legal abortion, she will do so, and she will have to pay more money. She will now not only have to pay for the abortion itself, but also the traveling cost. Not all people can afford these costs. So by keeping abortion legal and clinics open more women will have the chance to exercise their right and have their desired abortion. If a working woman or student suddenly has to leave the country to have an abortion, this means she will have to think of excuses and lies for an explanation. This is not fair to the woman, she should not have to explain herself to anyone, it is her body and therefore she can do what she wants, she does not need other people’s
