501 .1 - Be able to address the range of communication requirements in own role Health and social care professionals need good communication skills to develop positive relationships and share information with people using services. We also need to be able to communicate well with people’s families and/or carers and our own colleagues and other professionals. It is important therefore, if we are considering a career in health and social care, to gain the knowledge, understanding and practical skills needed to develop effective interpersonal skills. There are several different forms of communication used in a health and social care environment. :Verbal communication Verbal communication uses words to present ideas, thoughts and feelings.
Communication methods can include verbal and non-verbal communication. Use eye contact, as appropriate, touch and physical gestures, being aware at all times of your own body language. Be aware of the beliefs and values of the individual you are communication with and use the vocabulary that is suited to the individual, for example you would use different vocabulary with a young person than an elderly person. 1.2 Explain how effective communication affects all aspects of own work. Effective communication affects all aspects of work as it is a way of developing personal relationships with service users and their families so you are able to meet their needs.
This helps to reduce the possibility of mistakes being made. It ensures appropriate care service delivery. It is important to communicate with your colleagues, so that all targets and outcomes are met. Effective communication is important so that yourself and the service user fully understand eachother. This includes using words, feedback, action, body language and gestures.
It is vital for management to be aware and up to date with relevant legislation and information, as it is a part of their role to guide, support and influence other staff to do well in their own roles. As a member of management your own professional development not only impacts on yourself but also other staff, the Agency and the people who use the service. Staff must also ensure continuous professional development through reading policies and procedures to ensure they are working within the Agency’s set guidelines, attending and participating in team meetings in order for them to have input in to possible changes and discuss with colleagues good and bad working practices to ensure continuity in care. Staff must also be provided with training opportunities to update knowledge and ensure understanding as well as reading materials for informational purposes. In regards to the care industry, improving knowledge and practice ensures a happier, productive and more effective workforce and provides a sense of happiness, comfort, safety and well-being for service users therefore personal development is extremely important.

Effective communication helps us better understand a person or situation and enables us to resolve differences, build trust and respect, and create environments where creative ideas, problem solving, affection, and caring can flourish In my role as Branch Manager of a care provider effective communication is paramount to its success. It builds trust, respect, enhances learning and accomplishes goals for not on myself but everyone around me. My role commands that I wear many ‘hats’ communicating with services users, workers(Carers/Nurses), advocates, my internal consultants, external professional bodies, solicitors, government regulators and my own senior management team. There are four main reasons why we communicate, Instrumental(To ask, to refuse, to choose or to express our needs), Informative( To gain information, convey information or to describe something), Expressive(To express thoughts or feelings), Social(Attracting attention, building and maintaining relationships).

Within the care setting I communicate using: Communication books, Handover with Colleagues, staff message book, Staff meetings, meetings with my Line Manager Etc. Effective communication is important as it ensures that information is: clear, concise, accurate, non-judgmental, and informative. Within my job role the level of communication I have to uphold has to be one of paramount importance. I have a role of great responsibility dealing with service users and their families or advocates / health professionals and external agencies. Therefore, my communication has to be clear and professional whilst I am conveying instruction and information. I consider communication to be successful when the desired objective is attained.

This also allows for information, ideas and experiences to be shared, questions to be asked and is an important part of socialising and building relationships with others. 2. Explain how communication affects relationships in the work setting Communication in the work setting can be between colleagues, clients and their families. It can be used to express the person’s needs and helps to develop trust and establish good relationships between care givers, clients and their families.

From carers, other senior carers, management, service users their families and friends also other health care professionals. Good effective written and verbal communication and being able to use a variety of techniques promotes strong working relationships this will promote good quality care for the service user. Within my job role it is important that I communicate in the correct way to ensure that the needs of the service user is is understood and met. Before a new service user moves in to the home, either myself or the manager would go to visit the potential new service user to do an assessment this could be in their home, hospital setting or another home.
Use and Develop Systems that Promote Communication. 1.1 Communication affects my work setting in many different ways, between the service user, their family, friends, carers, seniors and all the medical professionals. This may be done in many different ways ie in person, email, telephone calls, text messages and written correspondence. All individuals have the right to communicate in whichever way they feel most comfortable and this should always be supported accordingly. Effective written and verbal communication and being able to use a variety of interpersonal techniques promotes strong working relationships and will promote good quality care.
