Work in the nursing profession

1. Discuss recent changes to nursing education.
Nursing education has radically changed in our recent history, most notably in the last 40 years to accommodate the continually growing role of nurses and the ever increasing advances in medical science and technology. The College of Nursing (Australia) introduced the first diploma level basic nursing course in 1975. The categories of ‘first level nurse’ (registered nurse) and ‘second level nurse’ (enrolled nurse) were installed in the new education program by the International Council of Nurses in 1983 and by 1985 all nursing education in NSW was to be transferred to tertiary level education. Registered nursing has been completed at a university level since 1990. (Crisp, Taylor, Douglas & Rebeiro, 2013, p. 5-7).
In 2010 The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) was established to support the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law legislation put in place to protect the public. The National Law is an agreement signed by the 14 health professional boards to recognise regulation and accreditation nationally and was enforced on the 1st of July. Previously this was conducted at a state level and by separate health professional boards. (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, (AHPRA), 2014).

2. Review and summarise the philosophy of your enrolled nurse course and its relevance to your clinical practice.
The philosophy outlines the essence of enrolled nursing, and the role of the nurse in the healthcare setting. It provides the fundamentals of the enrolled nurse and refers to the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council National Competency Standards (2002) as professional guidelines. Enrolled nurses should perform their practice in a professional, caring manner and be sensitive to the cultural and religious needs of the client,
