Eisenhower is best known for being the 34th President of the United States, from 1953 to 1961. He is also known for being a five-star general in the United States Army (Kelly). Born October 14, 1890, Dwight Eisenhower was the third of seven boys born to David Jacob Eisenhower and Ida Eisenhower. He was born in Denison, Texas and later moved to Abilene, Kansas. He became the number three leader of the tank corps and rose temporarily to lieutenant colonel in the army. During World War 1, Eisenhower trained tank crews at Camp Holt, this was his first command (Biography: Dwight David Eisenhower). After the war he reverted back to his regular rank of captain, a few days later he was promoted to major. Eisenhower then served at Camp Meade, Maryland until 1922 (Biography: Dwight David Eisenhower). He would later serve at many different posts and under the command of several prestigious generals. He served under such generals as John J. Pershing, Douglas Macarthur, and a few others (Biography: Dwight David Eisenhower). By 1936 Eisenhower was promoted to the rank of permanent lieutenant colonel. He was promoted to brigadier general on October 3, 1941 (Biography: Dwight David Eisenhower). Eisenhower was elected the 34th President of the United States. During his time as President, Eisenhower was pretty popular with the public and was elected for a second term (Biography: Dwight David Eisenhower). He did many things while president that helped improve the nation. One of his big accomplishments was the Interstate Highway System which built interstate highways throughout the United States (Biography: Dwight David Eisenhower). Eisenhower also helped overthrow an Iranian government that could have been a threat to the U.S. In 1957 he enacted the Eisenhower Doctrine which stated that the United States was prepared to use armed force to counter aggression from any country controlled by communism (Biography: Dwight David Eisenhower).
