Does that mean organic foods are healthier than conventionally grown foods? Is it more nutritious? Why is it more expensive? Supposedly, organic foods are grown without chemicals that can harm the land, water and human health, which in turn is better for one's health and environment. We don't exactly know this for sure and that is why as consumers, we need to get the facts and evidence straight before we shop.

They are always trying to sell us something. Producers of high-selling, major market junk foods have an obligation to their company’s stockholders to maximize profits to the best of their abilities. So they encourage consumers to eat more of their company’s products, not less. Americans are unhealthy and the food industry is doing nothing to change that.
While organically and traditionally grown foods have transported many different characteristics of the food we eat, genetic engineering can make it easier to narrow the characteristics specifically to what we need faster and in larger numbers. Another benefit to this is that these foods stay fresh longer resist pests and disease and therefore need less pesticides to grow and produce. The other significant claim that supports biotechnology is that they are safe and have a greater chance of helping our global environment. This is first because they resist the pests and diseases so they do not need chemicals which would compromise the environment and second because some of them require less tilling which preserves important topsoil, in turn reducing sediment run off into streams and rivers. While there are strict rules on labeling, because these foods are said not to differ much as far as how they are grown from traditional foods, the FDA does not require them to be labeled.
So why is organic food getting ever more popular? By just putting a label on food saying it’s healthier and safer than regular food would be enough to get people to buy it. Also with all the more and more places opening like Whole Foods Market, Central Market and Fresh Market attract people from everywhere. If consumers believe its better for them and it makes them healthier and maybe even live longer, people would buy it no matter if its more expensive than lets say Wal-Mart or Sam’s Club.
