In this poem, and most, there are examples of figurative language. When describing the snowman, the author writes, “the pale-faced figure with bitumen eyes” as a way to give the poem life and depth, as opposed to just saying the white snowman with coal eyes. We all know what a snowman looks like, but here the snowman is taking on more of a lifelike personality. By saying, “Returns him such a God–forsaken stare, as outcast Adam gave to paradise,” the author is giving this snowman a human-like personality. In the little boys mind, the snowman is begging the young boy to come in, like a puppy.
Shaken by the warning of Marley’s ghost, the Ghost of Christmas Past illustrates to Scrooge what his greed has cost him. Provided with such knowledge the lessen attempted by the Second ghoul becomes possible as the need for family interaction is demonstrated to Scrooge. Silently terrifying Scrooge as it reveals the ignorance portrayed in the 19th Century, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come evokes cold hearted man to beg for redemption. Hence, the bitter attitude of Scrooge is altered as a result of the input of all four phantoms. Jacob Marley instigates Scrooge’s transformation into a better man as he warns him of his miserable fate.
He knew that the snowball was aimed for him, and yet he dodged it making it hurt someone else instead. He couldn’t stop feeling guilty that everything was his fault. “I was contrite and guilty, for I knew that the snowball had been meant for me…” (5) This piece of evidence proves what I stated above, that Dunstan thought that the snowball was meant for him and only him, the hitting of someone else was all under his control. This guilt makes up decisions for Dunstan later on in the book. Right after the snowball accident, Mrs. Ramsay went over to the Dempster’s house to aid and support them.
The Grinch Who Stole Christmas Existentialism by definition is “A philosophical theory or approach that emphasizes the existence of the individual person as a free and responsible agent determining their own development through acts of the will.” When reading The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, I analysed it through an existentialism lens. The Grinch is perceived by people as “mean”, “vile” and “foul”. We see this in the song “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch” by Thurl Ravenscroft. This negative connotation is placed on the Grinch because he “stole Christmas”. In reality, he did not steal Christmas; “He HADN’T stopped Christmas from coming!

The characters in ‘Oliver Twist’ are successful as they are often labelled with some idiosyncrasy which represents Dickens’ distaste for society. He also loved to use melodrama, which is reflected in his characters, to create empathy and sympathy for a character. While Bumble has a complete lack of sympathy towards Oliver, Mr Sowerberry tries to win Oliver over by attempting to be nice to him, and therefore be seen as an author figure to Oliver. The characters in this chapter are presented as villains to show how Dickens felt about the authority figures in the 1830’s. As in many other of his books, Dickens uses his character’s personalities to represent the attitudes of society.
The reader is meant to be able to identify with the magic and beauty of Christmas whilst at the same time it makes them reflect on their attitudes and makes them think what they could do to be a better person in general, not just at Christmas time. The whole concept of the ghosts isn’t just thrown in for the fact that it is a Christmas tale; the ghosts are key elements within the story. They are actually viewed by some people as an extended metaphor, and could be acting as Scrooge’s conscience which takes him through different stages of his life, which in effect means that the ability to be a nice person was within him all
Thoreau-Observation Paper Living through a harsh winter in Northwestern Ohio, one may find themselves enveloped in a grey cloud of depression and lethargy. Nature, however, has a gentle way of reminding us that life, and the emotions we experience during it, are on a continuously changing path. Just like the sleeping stillness of winter is eventually replaced with springtime’s bursting buds of colorful new life, so too are the dark times in our life exchanged with those of great hope and joy. By closely monitoring nature’s every changing seasons one can be reminded that like our state of mind and emotion, nothing lasts forever. Watching the frantic flurry of snowflakes falling forlornly onto the cold frozen ground, I wondered if the sun would ever shine again.
A Christmas Carol By: For my deaf event I thought I might go to a Christmas carol being that it’s a classic and a great theme of Christmas, giving and receiving and just the spirit of it. I brought my friend Molly V. because she’s usually into going to ASL events with me and that was cool. A Christmas carol is about this guy named Ebenezer Scrooge- scrooge for short played by J.C. Cutler and he’s really sour when it comes to Christmas and just really mean, cruel and pretty negative and one night he gets visited by like three ghosts from Christmas past, present and future and they pretty much show him what’s happened, what’s happening and what could happen if he continues to be an ornery mean person and so he changes his ways and becomes more compassionate and empathetic towards other people in the end. It was a great musical and had a lot of meaning and really got you into "the season" with Christmas and the many holidays coming up and such. Also it took place at such a gorgeous place, the Guthrie!
The whole hotel felt broken. He liked it that way because it reflected how he felt. It was snowing outside. Silver specks attacking the people below. The red lights across the street reminded him that Christmas was just around the corner.
