What Men Go Through For Their Love By Christina Autry ENG 232 Many men, all around the world, are willing to go to great lengths to be with their true love. People tend to think that the woman is always in distress, while the man should always play the hero and Voltaire’s Candide is no different. Candide went through many trials to be with his true love during a time where it was not usually the case for a man to go through so much for a woman. Candide’s adventure is similar to other heroic stories because in each story, the main character is willing to go on many adventures in the name of true love. They are willing to do whatever it may take in order to achieve personal happiness. Although Voltaire did not write Miss Cunegonde’s story, she always seemed happy while she was with Candide. Voltaire wrote Candide, from Candides point of view, we can’t see what Miss Cunegonde is doing in order to get back to Candide or if she is even trying to be with him. The way some men pursue women and the way that women see that the pursuit is different now than it was then by the distances men will go through to be with their love. Voltaire’s Candide shows that some men are willing to go through many trials and tribulations to be with the woman they love; Candide went through, leaving home, committing murder, and leaving paradise to prove to Miss Cunegonde that he is willing to do whatever is needed of him in order to be with her. Some men are willing to go through many trials for that special woman. Candide was tossed from the only home he had ever known because he couldn’t stay away from Miss Cunegonde. One of the first attributes a woman looks for in a man is a willingness to leave his family home and move into his own place. Although Candide did not leave his home willingly, his main objective after he left was to get back to Miss Cunegonde, his lady love. Candide knew
