The War That Never Was During World War II, the Soviet Union suffered tremendous losses. Although the United States, England, and Russia shared Germany as a mutual enemy during the war, at Germany's defeat, there was little to bind them. Without a mutual enemy to fight against, post-World War II relations between the United States and Russia quickly soured. According to Russia, the U.S. deliberately stalled entering the war to allow for Germany to cause Russia maximum harm. Another issue was that Russia wanted the countries affected by the Nazi invasion to form a communist block as a cohesive strength against a possible German takeover in the future. Senator Joseph McCarthy from Wisconsin publicly accused numerous officials from communist countries that they had intentions to take over America. Ultimately, McCarthy’s accusations were false, yet he was able to create a powerful communist ‘witch hunt’ across America during the 1950s, making unjustified claims and endless investigations. Although none of McCarthy’s accusations were true, the political tension was enhanced greatly. An obsessive search for communist spies, soon became know as McCarthyism, was growing. Trying to find a communist spy was extremely difficult in the Hollywood career; anyone who identified as communist sympathizers lost their jobs and reputations were ruined. Several had their passports taken, while others were thrown jail for not giving names of other communists. All trials were publicized, and often careers were destroyed based on untrue accusations. All artists brought to trial were blacklisted and for most, this meant the end of promising careers. However, after many years the intensity simmered down and many were able to return to work. The majority of Americans found it very hard to get used to the idea that the Cold War had ended. Since 1945, all most Americans knew was the Cold War life that included McCarthyism, backyard bomb shelters, emergency drills, and witch hunts. Now that the United States had won over her enemy, Americans were looking once again towards a safe and prosperous life. The conditions in the United Stated during the Cold War were significant in shaping the rest of U.S.
