War Pigs and its cover: A true complain to war Cover songs, good or bad, legitimate or illegitimate? Those are the main questions people make to themselves when listening to a cover song, some of them think these type of songs are good, some of them think they are bad; some think the artists that perform these songs are uncreative and shouldn’t be called real musicians or singers, some of them do. In this essay I will discuss why this songs are good and why they are not just mere coping from another artist hit based on two songs, an original and the cover from another artist. The song I chose for this essay is called War Pigs by Black Sabbath released in 1970 on their album named “Paranoid”, the song is covered by the band Faith No More on their album “ The Real Thing” released in 1989. It was August 1969 in Bethel, New York, the Woodstock festival just started and thousands of people were celebrating 3 days of “peace” at the Woodstock Festival with music centered on utopian themes of peace, free love and harmony with your surroundings, which were a reflection of the ideals of and philosophy of the hippie culture. Two weeks after the Woodstock Music Festival the band named Black Sabbath was performing for the first time under this name (Black Sabbath), playing songs categorized for the first time as a new genre called Heavy metal filled with loud guitars, heavy drumming and angry dystopian lyrics. Their working class-anger and frustration because of the post war were communicated through the vocal delivery and lyrics of Black Sabbath’s singer Ozzy Osbourne. War Pigs released in September of 1970 is the clearest example of this complain not only against the war but also against the damage that war causes and caused to many people and to the governors that only cared about money and their own interests.
