-Seems to follow Raphael’s typical subject matter of the beautiful world of nature. CHARACTERS -Three characters in this piece are the Virgin Mary, Baby Jesus and St. John -St. John is depicted presenting Jesus with a crucifix shaped stick foreshadowing the death of Jesus years after. -He also gazes up toward Jesus instead of standing to his height in respect for his holiness -Although this hierarchy is only subtle because Mary’s arm reaches out to St. John to include him in the composition. -The Virgin Mary stares longingly at the crucifix shape with a concentrated expression as if in thought, her position is also rather dramatic. -Mary is once again wearing her traditional clothing of a red under garment and blue over cloak and skirt.
Susan Hill creates mystery by referring to her as “the woman in black”. This gives us a desire to find out more because her name doesn't give anything away. However, at the same time we feel fearful because we are given no other details by this about her character and how she may appear. “Black” gives a chilling feel because the colour black has connotations of death. The description of her appearance in the chapter “The Funeral of Mrs Drablow” creates an enigmatic tension.
It was made of pure copper and was heavy! Another interesting fact about the first pennies was that they were designed and minted by a variety of private mints. This resulted in the variations of their design, weight and diameter. In 1792, the US Congress created the US Mint and the US finally had uniform currency. The first penny created by the US Mint was still made of 100% copper, over an inch in diameter, and its design had an image of a woman with long, flowing hair - Lady Liberty.
Once in the section of Christian Art, you are drawn to a collector’s piece called, Virgin and Child. The historical importance of this piece is that, it represents one of the few, but many symbolic figures which are valuable and significant to the Christian faith. The significance of the piece is that it represents Jesus as a child being in the arms of his mother, the Virgin Mary. The piece, which is sculpted completely in wood, can trace to the origins of Northern France around the second quarter of the 14th century. This period in the history of France (the Franks) is known as the Capetian Dynasty, which was mostly influenced by the movement of Gothic art.
However, there are three ways to view God; this is called the Holy Trinity. It represents God as God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. The Holy Trinity is a mystery of the Christian religion; however there are explanations for why it is the way it is. According to Father Abraam D. Sleman, Christians say “God the Father,” because He is the father of Jesus Christ and he is our Father. Explained earlier, God chose Mary to be the mother of Jesus.
However, the story behind the sibyls is much too important to underestimate. The monumental state in which the five chosen sibyls appear in the Sistine Chapel reflects Michelangelo’s knowledge of their faith-filled importance that was not necessarily acknowledged prior to his depiction of them. Because of their inclusion in the majestic Sistine Chapel and their feminist diversion from normalcy in the Middle Ages, these five ancient female seers’ prophecies on the coming of Christ have continued to be of essence throughout history. A sibyl is defined as an ancient female seer whose visions and oracles were said to have prophesized the coming of Christ. Whereas the meaning of the word “prophet” is known around the world today, the term “sibyl” is one that is seemingly foreign in modern times.
Symbols help people identify religions through paintings, pottery, and jewelry. These symbols each have a deep meaning behind them for their religion, but also can be compared to symbols in the other religions around them. In Christianity they have a symbol called the ichthys, which is a fish symbol. This symbol used by early Christians to be a secret symbol so they would not be persecuted. It is even believed that the word Ichthus in Greek (ΙΧΘΥΣ) in acrostic forms the sentence “Jesus Christ God’s Son is Saviour.” I is the first Greek letter in the word for Jesus, CH is the first letters in the Greek word for Christos, TH is the first letters in Greek word for THeou which is God, Y is Yios which is Greek for son, and S is for Soter which in Greek is saviour.
“A sacrament is a ritual in which the Sacred (God) is present. Participation in a sacrament is participation in the Holy, a way of communing with God, of building or renewing one’s spiritual life” (Schulman 2009). “All world religions have sacraments, but only Christians call them sacraments…Most Christian churches celebrate sacraments, but there is a wide spectrum of understandings on the number and meaning of the sacraments” (Mueller 198). Where does the word sacrament come from? While doing research I found that “The word may have been suggested by its secular meaning, the oath of allegiance taken by a Roman soldier on enlistment.

The base of the pyramid is 568,500 square feet and the length of each side is 745 feet. The height of the pyramid is 449 feet (Orcutt). The Great Pyramid was constructed using mathematics is acceptable, because of the evidences of the early mathematics found in Egypt, such as Rhind Papyrus. In my opinion and according to my knowledge of Egyptian mathematics, I believe that the theories about the people who built the pyramid cannot be true, since there are no clear evidences of the mathematics that was used to build the Great Pyramid. One of the theories includes the use of PHI, Golden Mean which is equal to 1.618, in the Great Pyramid (Orcutt).
