Effects of Urinary Incontinence in Adults Charlotte Welch Phillips Community College University of Arkansas The purpose of this paper is to understand the incontinence that some adults encounter in everyday life. Having the knowledge to know why and how incontinence effects people as they age will help a person to cope better. Knowing that there are different things that effect urinary incontinence and who’s at risk for urinary incontinence can help to. Urinary incontinence refers to any involuntary leakage of urine associated with a feeling of urgency, which can be classified into different categories (Keyock, 2011). Some types include stress, mixed, overflow, functional, and urge urinary incontinence. Women are twice as likely as men to experience incontinence (Keyock, 2011). 35% of the total population over 60 years of age is incontinent (Keyock, 2011). Some interventions would be to observe voiding patterns, documenting intake and output, provide appropriate care for patient’s urologic condition, monitor progress, and report patient’s responses to treatment (Ralph, 2014). Assist with specific bladder elimination procedures, such as bladder training (Ralph, 2014). Place patient on the commode every two hours while awake and once during the night, provide privacy, and gradually increase intervals between toileting (Ralph, 2014). Place a bedside commode next to the patient’s bed (Ralph, 2014). Maintain fluids to 3,000 liters daily unless patient is on a fluid restriction (Ralph, 2014). Have patient wear easily removable clothes to reduce frustration and delay in voiding routine (Ralph, 2014). Maintain a rigid toilet regimen by placing patient on a toilet at specific times and keep baseline micturition record for three to seven days (Ralph, 2014).
