Unit 1: The Business Environment - P1 During this report I will be investigating the range, business purposes and ownership of two contrasting businesses. The two businesses that I have chosen to write about are Tesco and Oxfam. Range of different businesses A business can be defined by the geographic range in which it operates weather it is local, national, international or global. Examples of local businesses include newsagents, local garage, local charity and town councils. National businesses would be businesses such as the national lottery, British heart foundation and the central government. International businesses include BMW, United Nations and marks and spencer. Nike, Coca-Cola and McDonalds are examples of global businesses. My two chosen businesses Tesco and Oxfam are both International businesses. There are three main types of industry in which firms operate. These sectors form a chain of production which provides customers with finished goods or services. The primary sector - These are industries that extract raw materials from natural resources. This sector covers the farming, fishing and mining industries. The secondary sector - The secondary sector processes the raw materials that come from the primary sector. The secondary industry includes manufacturing (e.g. cars, tinned food, steel) and construction (e.g. building houses, factories, roads). The tertiary sector - this is the service sector which provides services (like banking) to businesses in the primary and secondary sectors and so helps them to sell their goods, e.g. shops, banks, insurance companies, restaurants, hotels, and healthcare services. It also includes some direct personal services to individuals. Tesco's belong to the tertiary sector because it does not make products as such but it mainly provides a valuable service that consumers and other businesses are prepared to pay
