He feels like he let her down. Holden gives a fake name so he wouldn’t have to elaborate on his life to this woman.

In the short story “A&P” by John Updike, check out boy Sammy stands up for the “mistreatment” of girls dressed in bikinis who came into the grocery store that he worked at. While practically drooling at the girls as they walked through the aisles, his mind had essentially put them on a silver platter. When his boss told the girls to not come back without some proper clothes on, Sammy quits his job saying to his manager, “You didn’t have to embarrass them.” Sammy’s abrupt decision to quit showed how much he was caught up with the girls, of whom he didn’t even know. After handing back his apron, he ran outside expecting to see the girls waiting for him in order to thank him for standing up for them. Obviously when he got outside, they were long gone.
We are introduced from the beginning of Raymond Carver’s Cathedral to a man that seems to be perturbed and agitated. The husband “ wasn’t enthusiastic about [Robert] visit, he was no one [he] knew. And his being blind bothered [him].” (20) He is uninterested in the relationship that Robert has with his wife. (21) The only reason he knows any thing about Robert is because she told him, he didn’t ask and didn’t care to know. We see how selfish and self centered the narrator is as he has thoughts of, “this blind man” “coming to sleep in [his] house” and telling his wife “maybe [he] could take him bowling” (22).
My understanding of the ending of the story is that the young man Sammy quit due to the fact that his boss was rude to the young ladies. Lengel felt that the bathing suits that the girls had on was not decent and should have not been worn in the A&P store. There was no harm done to anyone in the store. The workers there on a slow Thursday received some enjoyment while the girls were walking around the store looking for the herring snacks for Queenie’s mom. The girls should have had respect and covered themselves up going into the store.
Stella changing the subject, she asks Blanche have had breakfast with Eunice but she hadn’t had it, take some coffee only. Blanche’s opinion to, “You’re married to a mad man” (P.64). Stella is not considering to her sister’s advice and Blanche is not able to believe her sister and she mumbling, “One tube smashed beer bottles mess in the kitchen”. Then Stella begins to work of cleaning but Blanche once again saying, “I won’t have you cleaning up for him” (P.66) and she tries to think of a way to get them both out of the situation. Stella points out that she is not anything she necessarily wants to get out of.
