The Growling, howling, and snarling sounds that haunted my dreams as a child are still the sounds I think of when the conversation turns to wolves. The growling, howling, and snarling I’m referring to isn’t coming from wolves but the people fighting for and against the repopulation of the species. So what’s the truth about wolf reintroduction? Why is there such a heated debate? One side of the argument states they were hunted to the brink of extinction for a reason, the other side praising this majestic animal for its ability to live and thrive in the face of such adversity. The two major insistences of wolves and humans conflicts involve a median of livestock or domestic animals. Wolves primarily feed on deer, elk, and moose, and only occasionally will prey on domestic livestock. This behavior can be culled by the rancher taking a few precautions to limit wolves and livestock interactions. The issue that should matter to everyone is how they’re managed. What that will look like is yet to be seen; whether it will be managed by the hunting community, state agencies, or natural processes will be the next major hurdle in the reintroduction of the wolf. One thing I do know is that the plan needs to protect the tax payer from footing the bill for individual’s interest. By instituting a few measures immediately we can take liability off the general public and let the special interest group’s work out the details with WDFW. These measures should include: Wolves caught in the act of predation of domestics should have consequences strong enough to stop the behavior, owners should also have consequences if they don’t make every effort to use non-lethal methods to deter wolves from preying on their animals, and any act of predation on public lands should be at the liability of the user not the
