Both of these events sparked many debates on the topic of guns and how to stop these events from happening. Gun control in America is a very controversial topic with advocates pushing for more restrictions and anti gun control supporters pushing for fewer laws on gun control. With no straight forward answer
Gun casualties and incidents throughout the country have woken the public up from its ignorance and shown them the danger guns can pose to society (Martinez, 2013). While some people want a complete blanket ban on the ownership of guns, others wants an easier access to guns so that every person may look after their own security. Part of what makes the term gun control a very controversial topic is that it’s used in a ambiguous way that does not explain the details of the issue and the demands, apart from literally controlling guns. The two prominent sides of the debate are the groups who ask for liberal gun laws that make it easier for a person to procure guns and conversely, there are groups who want to repeal the second amendment. I personally am a strong believer that an “ideal society” should have no guns; nevertheless crime is a big problem to the citizens of our society and guns are necessary.
Franklin D. Roosevelt’s solicitor general, Robert H. Jackson, said the Second Amendment grants people a right that “is not one which may be utilized for private purposes but only which exists where the arms are borne in the militia or some other military organization provided for by law and intended for the protection of the state.” The idea is that if we can restrict who can have guns and what they can be used for, then there will be less violence and gun related deaths. However, this is difficult to enforce because there are so many guns already out in the public. “There are close to 300 million privately owned firearms in the U.S. Even if congress passed a law banning the sale of firearms tomorrow- which violates the Second Amendment- it would be decades before the supply of guns significantly, especially considering that many guns are operational 100 years or more after they’re manufactured.” Criminals can easily get the guns from friends, or illegally from ones that are currently privately owned or they can get them from other countries. In conclusion, I am currently against gun control because I want to make sure that innocent citizens can have access to guns and be able to protect themselves against criminals when they need to.
With the election of President Barack Obama, some that oppose that weapons ban are fearful of the impending changes in the law, which has affected gun owners such as me. The assault weapons ban that may possibly be reinstated in the coming years will infringe upon the rights of law abiding citizens to bear arms, and will not prevent criminals from criminal uses of guns. First and foremost, I must state that I am a law abiding gun owner, however I do not own an assault rifle. In addition, I have no plans nor desire to own an assault rifle in the future. However, I have family and friends who are law abiding citizens who do own assault rifles which were purchased legally with background checks.
The second amendment says “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” (Bill of Rights). But how could we interpret this amendment? Does this mean that we have the right to have only one gun, or we have the right to have as many guns as we want? Every right has its limitations and this right is not the exception. The first amendment says: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech…” (Bill of Rights).
The Second Amendment is a law that was formulated to give the citizens of The United States of America the right to own and bear firearms. More gun control laws have been set in place as a deterrent for criminals to purchase firearms. Gun control laws are not the only way to avoid and protect criminals from purchasing firearms. Even with the gun control laws, debates, the Second Amendment and the Tiahrt Amendment, there is a lack of enforcement of these laws which has caused more violence. There also has not been a reduction in the number of criminals with guns.
In addition, we don’t need assault weapon to protect ourselves, its not a 'civilians' job to stop criminals who possess guns, it is the police's job. However, we can’t stop people to bear gun because that is civil right for all the citizen according to the second amendment of U.S constitution. I understand some amount of people do need a gun for outdoor activity like hunting, this is different from those people who use it to commit crimes. They should allow to bear gun but they should be registered and have done the background checks before the purchase a gun. In conclusion, a lot people says that they need a gun to protect themselves, but Unfortunately there are many misguided individuals in our society, and I believe that a society would be better off if they had less access to
They believe stronger gun control equals less crime. Suffice it to say, crime is a fact of life. Crime is going to happen regardless of any law ever passed. There will always be that element in any given society that just doesn’t care, and they don’t need a gun to carryout their whims either. In saying that however, criminals are going to get there hands on firearms whenever they feel the need arises.
Gun control laws have become such a huge controversy in the United States due to the fact that citizens believe their Second Amendment right is being taken away from them. In my eyes, I believe that extended gun control measures should be taken to ensure that access to assault weapons should be limited to certain people. I believe one deserve a well rounded background check to see if any mental health issues are visible. I also believe you have the right to own a weapon and the government is not trying to take away your hunting rifles, personal permitted handguns, etc. They government is emphasizing more on the fully automatic weapons, explosives, armor and other things that only the military should have access to.
In addition, we do have a grave problem which has been controverted for a long time that is gun control ordinance in the social life. Gun violence and accidents are increasing every year. In the United States, most of the states can buy guns legally, and some of the states’ purchase requires no license. Some states in the United States have a strict gun control law. One of them is District of Columbia.
