David Sneed Cami Greenfeild English 102, 31975 30 September 2014 Guns in the right hands In the last few years a new issue has arisen in the United States. It has increased in controversy more than gay marriage and abortion. What could create such a heated conversation? The answer is, the upcoming gun laws. The United States government is slowly implementing new regulations on what firearm individuals can use, and how they can use them. These regulations are causing an uproar throughout the nation. Everyone is flooding social media with opinions, facts, lies, just about anything in order to get their point across. So what is the answer? The militia was designed for self-defense. The new gun laws do not allow individuals to carry firearms on their persons. Thus eliminating the use of guns for self-defense. In The Quill, Thomas Jefferson, from The Virginia Constitution, Third Draft agrees that, “…Arms in hands of citizens [are] to be used at individual discretion…in private self-defense,” (78.2 p.28). Many people assume self-defense is protecting one’s self from loose criminals and aggressors, but self-defense is not merely about people. Ranchers protect their livestock every day from coyotes and other wildlife with their rifles. Mountain men protect their homes from bears with their firearms. Of course, there will always been a need for an individual too protect themselves from another, but that is not the only thing firearms are good for. If the new gun laws don’t allow for individuals to carry a firearm for protection then criminals will kill innocent families, coyotes will kill innocent cattle and the big bad wolf is going to go eat Mary’s little…show more content…
Deakins noted that whether gun laws are in place or not criminals will always have access to the black market, where they can obtain just about anything they want. Deakins also makes a point that allowing citizens to carry guns actually works better to fight off crime, “While neither state waiting periods nor the federal brady law is associated with a reduction in crime rates, adopting concealed-carry gun laws cut death rates from public multiple shootings by 69 percent.” Deakins goes on to say that allowing individuals to carry guns deters violent crime
