The prophet Jeremiah was the son of the priest Hilkiah from Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. Jeremiah's name means either "The Lord Exalts of The Lord Throws Down." (Easley, 2002, p.147) The author of the book of Jeremiah is credited to the prophet himself, "although many critical scholars believe that portions were written by other anonymous prophets." (Easley pg. 150) "The biographical sections were written in third person," (Easley, 2002, p.152) which may be interpreted as evidence of Baruch's (Jeremiah's assistant) contribution to the writings. The writing ministry of Jeremiah began in the fourth year of the reign of King Jehoiakim in 605 B.C. until approximately 586 B.C. Jeremiah was called to be a "prophet to the nation of Judah as well as a messenger of God for all nations." (Radmacher, Allen, and House,2004, p. 503) Jeremiah was told by God that, "Before I made you in your mother's womb, I chose you. Before you were born, I set you apart for a special work. I appointed you as a prophet to the nations." (NCV, Jeremiah 1: 4-5) The people of Judah once had an affinity with God until they began having an unfaithfulness to the covenant and live idolatry. The once loved and sought after love of God from the people of Judah was no more, they began to worship other Gods, trees, and rocks. Jeremiah prophesied to the people of Judah this message from God, "Listen to the Lord's message, you descendants of Jacob, you tribes of Israel. The Lord says: "What accusation did your ancestors bring against me? What made them turn away from me? They worshiped worthless idols and became worthless themselves. (GNT Jeremiah 2: 4-6) The worship of other Gods angered the Lord and he vowed he would punish the unfaithful. The Lord said, "Your own evil will punish you, and your turning on me will condemn you.
